Officials Hunt Deadly Egyptian Cobra on Loose at Bronx Zoo

It's deadly, and it's out there, waiting.

That might sound like the trailer for a campy monster flick, but it's a real concern at New York's Bronx Zoo, where officials and staff are scrambling to find a deadly Egyptian cobra that slithered away from its home last Friday and hasn't been seen since.

The zoo's Reptile House remained closed Monday as a precaution while workers searched for the runaway reptile, a zoo spokeswoman confirmed to FoxNews.com.

While the roughly 20-inch-long Egyptian cobra -- armed with a massive dose of lethal venom that it injects into its victims -- has been unaccounted for since Friday afternoon, zoo officials say they're confident it hasn't gone far and isn't in a public area. Its enclosure was in an isolation area not open to visitors.

"To understand the situation, you have to understand snakes," zoo Director Jim Breheny said in an email Sunday.

"they're confident it hasn't gone far and isn't in a public area"

Sounds like the same guys at DHS who are "confident that no terrorism was involved", even before the smoke settles.

As long as they don’t have any planes, they should be OK.

Don’t worry there are a bunch of folks going around the Snake House calling “here, cobra buddy, here.”

My father once told me something about snakes which I have never forgotten. He said:

"There are TWO kinds: Rattlesnakes and cobras. If it DOESN'T have rattles at the end of its tail then it's a cobra".

;-)

The cobra is probably going to die from exposure to the cold weather.

Definitely terrorism. I was recently at an aquarium among the usual family groups when here came four young, well-dressed Middle Eastern men. Hmmmmmm....p.s. there were deadly snakes at this aquarium. I really got the feeling they were looking for opportunities.

Over 50,000 die in alcohol-related traffic events, and we’re excited about finding a cobra that hasn’t struck anyone yet.

“The missing cobra is an adolescent of its hooded species....”

Great. A teenager with poisonous teeth has run away and is hiding. Probably sulking because he got grounded. No good can come of this. When he bites someone, it will be a cry for help and we will need grief counselors or some such.

Honey Badger don’t give a #^**! (hat tip to Ace of Spades)

Of course then there would be a honey badger on the loose in the Bronx.

Oops! I’m sorry. When I read that a snake had escaped, I thought we were all talking about Obama sneaking out of the WhiteHouse...

The Bronx Zoo has brought in a Free Range Chicken to handle this. The Free Range Chicken makes a nest out of Cobras.

Assuming this critter slithered off to some nice, dark, little crevice somewhere, you have to wonder how they determine who gets to make the first peek ...
