Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson will announce a run for president in April, according to a report from Fox News on Friday. Johnson served two terms as governor in the 1990s and early 2000s and has often been cited a a potential presidential candidate, including for the Libertarian Party.

Fox reports that Johnson, a Republican, will bypass the exploratory phase and go straight into his candidacy. The report also says Johnson will announce in New Hampshire, the site of the nation’s first primaries and an extremely important early state for presidential hopefuls.

Johnson is a libertarian Republican in the mold of Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas.

I think I only heard Governor Johnson speak once, but he didn't seem crazy. Any New Mexicans have opinion? Old Mexicans need not weigh in.

Decent guy, but a bit too Ron Paul-esque for me.

Never heard of him. And I doubt whether anyone else outside of New Mexico has, either.

Yawn.

You don't get very far as a pro-abortion Republican.

I lived in NM during Gary Johnson’s two terms. He left the state with money in the bank. Bill Richardson came along and squandered that (and a whole lot more) in short order.

He’s a libertarian Republican (liked to talk about legalizing marijuana) and a businessman.

Plus, he likes to climb mountains and do Iron Man events.

The Democrats gave him a nickname that had to do with him always vetoing their spending bills. He vetoed more bills than he signed into law. Democrats in NM are the same as everywhere else - spend, spend, spend.

apparently if you run a small state you’re no longer qualified to run for president. That would apply to Johnson too

I heard him speak in Iowa City last fall. More than half of his speech was about legalizing drugs.

He is not sounding too strong. There are no more hippies or we wouldn't have started our third war last week.

Anybody can run for President. All you have to do is fill out the paperwork, pay the proper fees and off you go. Hundreds do every election cycle so they can claim that they ran for the Presidency of the US.

Unless this guy can suddenly come up with a new and innovative trick to win the Presidency, it is another one of those “I ran for President” scams. IMHO

You do make it sound good. What does it pay? I am already willing to be paid to quit and throw my enormous support to the highest bidder.

Mayhap “scam” was a little strong. Perhaps, “opportunity for notoriety” would be better said.
