A good game to watch.

A lot of basketball fans diss the NIT - but I’ve enjoyed many NIT games over the years. You can see some good basketball.

Given the way Alabame played thru the tournament, I half expected them to win tonight. Their defense was stunning but Wichita State’s shooting won the day.

As they left the court the Wichita State squad was yelling, “Were Number 69!”

ESPN.

Back in ‘98 my alma mater (the University of Minnesota) won the NIT - which was later revoked by the NCAA...but that’s a whole ‘nother story.

I had the opportunity to go but didn’t. I think it would have been great to see a game at MSG - especially when it’s your team that’s playing.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they could beat lots of teams in
the NCAA tournament. What could be a fun thing and an inspiration
to the NIT folks is to invite the NIT champion to play the
NCAA tournament champion either as an extra game at the
end of the tournament season or as the first game of the
next season—the teams might be different, but it would
be probably a fun kind of matchup....and generate enought
“face” time on the networks that it would help both schools.

Basketball is the only sport where the level of excitement goes down as the level of competition goes up.

A skinny high school kid hitting a three pointer is as exciting as hell.

A college kid hitting a basket from mid court is pretty exciting too. You don't see that very often either.

But an NBA player doing a layup shot when he's almost as tall as the backboard with a slight leap is so ho-hum routine.

They ought to raise the height of the basket as the level of competition moves up.

NIT: Nobody's Interested Tournament

It wasn't always that way. It was pretty big for the first couple of decades or so.

some have proposed raising the basket to 12’ in the NBA and widening the court. The players have gotten so big that there is no room to move around ... the game has changed.

I think if they want the NIT to be more relevant, what they should do is drop all of the Regional Final losers into the NIT, along with the other 4 teams that remain. Then that way whoever wins the NIT can claim that they’re #5, instead of #69.
