The British soldier who broke into Auschwitz: Denis Avey swapped uniforms with Jewish pal

A former British soldier and prisoner of war has recalled the horror he felt after swapping uniforms with a Dutch Jew - and breaking into Auschwitz.

Denis Avey, 92, was captured during World War II and sent to the IG Farben plant, known as Auschwitz III, where the deadly gas was produced. But when Mr Avey was told about the mass killings and smelled the horrendous stench from nearby crematoriums he vowed to witness the atrocities for himself.

The brave soldier bribed guards with cigarettes and swapped uniforms with a Dutch Jew who was roughly the same height. With the risk of almost certain death, he broke into the deadly camp and witnessed for himself the 'vaguely human' corpses piling up each day.

Mr Avey has now for the first time told the incredible story in a book called The Man Who Broke Into Auschwitz. He recalls using the cigarettes and chocolate from Red Cross packages to bribe guards during weeks of preparation.

Stories like this make me wish I could take the jerks who deny this all happened and slam their face into the screen. These deniers make me sick! God bless this man for his courage and wisdom!

Everyone should know about the great hero of Auschwitz, RUDI VRBA, who was the first escapee. He and another Jewish prisoner escaped and made their way to Hungary, to warn the Jewish leaders there about the extermination camps and to urge them to resist the impending deportations. The head of the Hungarian Jewish leadership, Eric Kastner, used the information to get his own family and friends out, but did not inform the Jews of Hungary, who were shipped off to the death camps. Vrba wrote a book about it, the original title was “I Cannot Forgive” and then it was republished, I think as “I Escaped Auschwitz”. A great book, a great man, who was never welcomed or honored in Israel.

I don’t believe this story for a moment. Just some guy trying to make some quick cash for his kids.

So he’s in a camp, but bribes a guard with cigarretes to escape, trades place with a Dutch Jew to sneak into a concentration camp to see what’s happening there so he can tell the world. Funny thing is, he doesn’t tell the world till 60 years later.

So if he could sneak out of the camp, why would he sneak back into the camp he previously was in? And why would the Dutch Jew go back to his concentration camp? If you were them, wouldn’t you take off running!?

Could you sneak out of the local prison and then sneak into another local prison in your local area? Heck no. Well obviously those prison camps in WWII were packed to the gills with guards and machine gun towers. Seriously it’s a total scam.

Here’s another mistake in the story. He bribes the guards with cigarettes and chocolate from the Red Cross package. Don’t you think the guards would already be rummaging through those care packages? And would you, as a prison guard, let some prisoner escape and come back in for chocolate and a smoke? I sure as heck wouldn’t risk it for chocolate when I could just take it right out of their care packages for myself.

I feel somewhat the same disbelief.

Why haven’t we heard this story long before?

Yeah, so this guy sends the Dutch Jew right back into his concentration camp. Come on!!!

Sneaking out of one prison would be a monumental feat in of itself. But sneaking in and out of 2 prisons — no freaking way!

Who in their right mind would sneak into a concentration camp as a prisoner?

“Stories like this make me wish I could take the jerks who deny this all happened and slam their face into the screen. These deniers make me sick! God bless this man for his courage and wisdom!”

Ike anticipated there would be people who try to deny this happened. He made sure as much documentation was done as possible.
People that deny the extermination of Jews during WW2 are truly demented humans.

There have been of course some individual stories that turn out to have been made up or embellished however.

And I love the word “pal”.

“Here ya go, pal. Just put this uniform back on and march back into that death camp. Nice knowing ya’, pal.”

Doesn’t pass the smell test.

From the last paragrph of the article: “The International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation has honoured Mr Avey with a diploma. A spokesman in Israel said: ‘We feel that his story is genuine,’ adding that a fellow survivor corroborated his account to the foundation’s satisfaction.”

I’ve known several holocaust survivors who never discussed their experiences with their family or anyone else for DECADES due to many reasons: wanting to forget & move one; not wanting to hurt family members;survivor’s guilt; and, as stated in this article, not being believed when they tried.

If you go to France, it’s hard NOT to find a Frenchman who’s father/mother/uncle was in La Resistance or who hid a Jewish family in their attic.

I remain somewhat skeptical based on the author’s own account of the story.

Yeah but sneaking in and out of 2 prisons with guards who would machine guy you down in a New York minute?

Do you think you could pull off sneaking in and out of 2 prisons in your area even though they don’t have machine guns and guards ready to cap you? No way. And then he sends the Dutch Jew back into the prison camp? Why didn’t they take off for allied lines?
