Google's Android OS has gained an astonishing 7 points of market share in the US smartphone market in the past three months, Comscore says.
RIM's market share over the same period collapsed, dropping almost 5 points.
Apple's share increased slightly, but is dead in the water and has now fallen way behind Android. Android now has a third of the US market (33%). RIM's share has plummeted to 29%. Apple is holding at 25%. In the "also ran" category, Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 did nothing to stop its decline, which fell from 9% to 7.7%. And Palm, which is barely worth mentioning anymore, fell another point to 2.8%.
Why do the Android gains matter? Are Apple bulls right that Apple has an insurmountable hold on the "premium" segment of the market and that it doesn't matter who has the other 75%?
The Android gains matter because technology platform markets tend to standardize around a single dominant platform (see Windows in PCs, Facebook in social, Google in search). And the more dominant the platform becomes, the more valuable it becomes and the harder it becomes to dislodge. The network effect kicks in, and developers building products designed to work with the platform devote more and more of their energy to the platform. The reward for building and working with other platforms, meanwhile, drops, and gradually developers stop developing for them

I saw an interview with the guy who runs digital media for Major League Baseball. They have a very successful app that runs on iPhones, iPads, and about 11 different Android devices.
He said the problem with Android is that the people who have it are less likely to buy anything. So the ROI for doing nifty things on Apple’s devices is higher than on Android. Over time this means that there will be more high-quality content available for iStuff than for Android.
I’ve been holding off even shopping for a smart phone. So I guess I have a dumb phone. They seem like fun but I haven’t felt a burning need for one, although there have been times it would have been handy to look something up on the road. Maybe when my b’day rolls around...
Why isn’t Windows 7 catching on? I know people at MS who thought that it would be very popular.
All the big tech companies are on the dark side. They’d their grandmothers into slavery if they could get away with it. I don’t see Apple or MS being more virtuous than Google.
I have an HTC EVO, but Verizon is very appealing to me - then the EVO 3D was announced, so I think I will stay with Sprint. I love Androids!
The article is ill concieved and so poorly researched that it is not a stretch in any way to assert that it was concieved and written in a single afternoon.
RIM has the secure data section of the business to itself. Muslim countries have banned Blackberry for a reason. In a very real sense, android and iOs do not have any place in this market sector.
Except they don’t have the Chairman on Obama’s cabinet and a czar.
The bottom line we have to stop supporting them.
How many conservatives are willing to give up their progressive crack? Not enough.

My work Droid geek buddy had an Evo with Sprint, but had such terrible customer service experiences with them, he shifted all of his phones to Verizon and got a Droid X. How have your experiences been with Sprint?
I hate all of the damn things. Ever go out to eat and watch people? They are either talking on cell phones or texting meaningless text messages constantly. My god, what did we do when we left home with a dime so we could call home if we needed help.
There is no telling how much productive time is lost from people texting during work. There is no telling how many people are killed or injured while texting and driving. And talk about TV’s being the valium of the masses. BS, people go home, sit down on the couch and start texting!!! Parents are even sueing school systems because they cannot text their children. Puleeeeeeeze.
I can see the day that cell phones will plug directly into the human brain so all communications can be downloaded/uploaded by just a thought. 1960’s science fiction come true, a brain in a beaker is all we will need.
Developer satisfaction is low down on the list for market makers.
Profit is #1, followed by power.
You can find developers on all platforms so that is not an issue. Many work on multiple platforms.
Microsoft C# is a good programming language, but MS’s development environment is far and away the most productive. The issue with MS is they are behind on Handset functionality, say interfacing with the phone, camera, GPS, and screen widgets.
Hell, Apple’s programs use Objective C and that goes back to Steve Jobs NeXT computer in the early 90’s.
All great points. But to be a bit of a contrarian - isn’t there at least something to be said for developer friendliness - by virtue of the fact that cool apps will translate into money and power for the handset makers?
Absolutely, but Microsoft is a perfect case in point. They are behind in market share, even with the most advanced development environment.
A really good guy can be very productive in spite of a not so good development environment.
Apple has spiffed their environment up nicely. You still have a lot of scut work to do. But that scut work means that the OS doesn’t have to work so hard and monitor so much.
The money guys don’t give a rats a$$ about that stuff it’s just f*ck you code it so I can get paid.
I hear ya - and you sound like you’ve been there, done that and gotten the T-shirt so I give your remarks the respect that they deserve.
As far as MS goes - well OK they have the best developer-friendly environment - I didn’t mean to imply that that was ALL that was needed to be a success - more along the lines that all other things being equal it seems like it would be better to be friendly than not.
MS phones seem to have no street cred i.e. nobody wants them (or so it seems to me) - regardless of how quick you could turnaround an app on that platform.
Actually, I haven’t had to call customer service yet for anything. They are MILES ahead of AT&T when it comes to their quality.
Going on nearly a year, I haven’t had one dropped or missed call - a frequent occurrence with AT&T. Every single time I’ve used the Internet, it’s been available - there were so many times I either had to turn on or off my wireless connection, or even reboot the phone. Not anymore.
I’m sure Verizon is the same way for your friend.
Cell phone carriers are like cable carriers now. Everyone has a good and/or bad story about them, and they'll do everything to get your business but not much to retain it.
Consequently, I've dropped my dX several times and it's still going strong.
