'American Idol’: Why Pia Toscano Was Sent Home (One of the biggest upsets in the show’s history)

Well, if you’re reading about “American Idol” tonight the comments on Twitter, Facebook and just about anywhere you look aren’t pretty.

Some fans are vowing to never watch again and the curse words are flying. That’s because we might have witnessed one of the biggest upsets in the show’s history. Idol darling Pia Toscano was sent home tonight.

The judges looked furious and the sobs were pouring out for this New York contestant. Even the guys on stage looked like they were teary-eyed and everyone look shocked.

Maybe the judges were part of the problem. They have been sugar-coating all of their comments lately, but last night they gave Pia the mildest of criticism. Maybe it was enough to shift the vote, because those were the only negative words of the night. Pia rocked Tina Turner’s “River Deep, Mountain High,” but Jennifer Lopez suggested for her to get to the next level, she should do what Michael Jackson used to do – study the greats. JLo said Jackson used to watch Gene Kelly and Pia should start studying as well.

In past performances, they compared her to Celine Dion, and Mariah Carey, and made comments like “you are the closest star in the American Idol universe.”

But there was always the subtle and not so subtle suggestion that she stop singing ballads. The judges clearly loved her and told her she had the full package, but told her to start owning the stage and making it big. Maybe America listened.

The best singer and a beautiful. But she lacked the spark that makes a star. I noted this a month ago. And if a non-expert such as myself saw it, then it was pretty obvious.
Singing talent is not enough to make it in the pop music industry. You need the whole act, the moves.

For you American Idol Fans out there, here’s my theory...

Pia Toscano is from NEW YORK CITY. NEW YORKERS WATCH, BUT DON’T USUALLY GET OFF THEIR BUTTS TO VOTE.

Take note of the past winners -— Kelly Clarkson (Texas), Ruben Studdard (Alabama), Fantasia ( North Carolina ), Carrie Underwood ( Oklahoma ), Taylor Hicks ( Alabama ), Jordin Sparks ( Arizona ), David Cook ( Kansas City, Missouri), Kris Allen (Arkansas)....

See anything in common ? THEY’RE ALL FROM RED STATES !!

It never occurred to me that I’d get upset over American Idol but voting Pia off last night was ridiculous. I figured she’d win. She had everything.

What a disaster.

I never used to watch American Idol but did this year because I like Jennifer Lopez. I was shocked that Pia was sent home. I just don’t get it. She is so talented and beautiful. Hope she goes on to do great things.

The show is more a voting competition, not just a singing competition.

Gee, this sort of thing hasn’t happened on AI since last year. And the year before that, and the year before that...

“NEW YORK CITY. NEW YORKERS WATCH, BUT DON’T USUALLY GET OFF THEIR BUTTS TO VOTE.”

This is because they’ve become accustomed to having Tammany Hall manufacture their votes for them.

This is only the 2nd season of AI that I’ve watched, but the talent is far and above what last year’s was.

They’re all so gifted that any criticism is really just nit picking and I’m sure the judges doing so with Pia played a part in her going home.

I thought Paul, Stefano or maybe Jacob would be booted before her.

What a shocker, I was truly pissed, lol! I cant even believe I even watch the show but it is what it is. This is what I think happens, she will be invited back to show by judges for second chance. Betcha

I’m so tired of the hoopla surrounding this talent show . . . and that’s all it is . . . our local Fox station devotes at least 5 minutes of newtime to promos and results of this madness every day. Who cares who wins? It seems if you can hold a scream for the longest and go up and down in the scale 50 times per second, you might win.

There doesn’t seem to be anybody who actually sings at a mild level so you can actually hear each word.

And this American Idol mentality has affected the way people think about politics too . . . who’s the best looking, who’s taller, etc. Abraham Lincoln never would have been elected nowadays.

Trust me, Pia can sing! Pia can sing much better than judge Jlo. In fact, she has a better voice than most of the “package deals” put together by the music industry. Pia IS the real deal. Actually, I liked all the performances - it’s a tough group this time - lots of talent.

Thia was one of my favorites. I think she has such a beautiful, special voice and I hope she can develop the other qualities to advance her career. She just doesn’t have the stage presence or enough outward confidence yet. But she’s only 15!
