It doesn't matter if it wasn't meant for our ears. It doesn't matter that NBA players might do it all the time.
And it doesn't matter in the slightest that Kobe Bryant(notes) wasn't using the usual, hateful, meaning behind a homophobic slur that starts with an "f" and ends with those who are mindful of the pain and suffering that the LGBT community has gone through cringing as we hear it.
Before we get to the specifics, here is Bryant's statement on the incident:
"What I said last night should not be taken literally. My actions were out of frustration during the heat of the game, period. The words expressed do NOT reflect my feelings towards the gay and lesbian communities and were NOT meant to offend anyone."
We know, Kobe. That's not the point.
Bryant apparently called referee Bennie Adams a "f*****" following both a personal and technical foul call that didn't go Kobe's way on Tuesday night (the video can be seen here), and Bryant has been rightfully excoriated for it. The league is investigating the tape, and the (needed) discussion is out in the open.
And the discussion should end here. He shouldn't have said it on Tuesday night, he shouldn't be saying the word away from cameras, and he shouldn't ever say it again. Doesn't matter, no excuses, I don't want to hear it. There are hundreds of individual curse words to use in that situation, don't use that one. We know he wasn't trying to question Adams' sexuality, or align being gay with negative connotations. It still doesn't give you license to shout that word.

Actually, it’s not a slur if he is a knob-gobbler...which I suspect.
As the sports power structure goes more left politically due to the overwhelming influence of Black players, it has also gone left socially - amoral and metrosexual.
Sports used to be one place in entertainment that was safely male - heterosexual male, American and Christian in character. The Left HATED it. No more.

The only sports that haven’t gone totally left are a few of the college football powers. (i.e. When I go to Alabama football games it’s not uncommon to see plenty of Rush Limbaugh and One Big Ass Mistake America signs on campus. Hell, you can even smoke at your seats in some places). I wonder how long before the leftist NCAA (who can go to hell) will take care of that.

AMEN Sarah! While I am in no way a Kobe or Laker fan, this is the biggest steaming pile I've seen in a while. Meanwhile, Loretta Sanchez can get away with mocking Southern people and tea party members and of course the Pravda media turns a deaf ear to that.

Not only that but apparently Kobe’s apology(Yes it was heartfelt) is falling on deaf ears from the homo crowd, they are still upset. Geez the man apologized get over it..its not like gays watch basketball anyway so Kobe did not lose any fans. Homos are hypocrites, plain and simple..they talk about tolerance and all that crap yet they have NO problem hanging Sarah Palin in effigy on Halloween 2008, yeah they had no problem with that..and how about calling Conservative women the S word and the C word, nah that’s fine cause they are Conservative, but call someone the F word and WOW its like the world is coming to an end.
Kobe said it in anger, he was pissed, the foul was pure BS, sometimes we say things in anger we regret, it happens, move on..but for gays they just want their 15 min of fame
