A fire apparently reignited inside the battery of a new Chevrolet Volt car early Monday, less than five days after the Volt, an electric hybrid, was involved in a blaze that destroyed a Barkhamsted garage where it had been plugged in for recharging.
Local authorities have been investigating whether Thursday's blaze was sparked by the Volt, but had not yet determined a cause when the fire rekindled.
"The rekindle this morning really adds to the mystery," Barkhamsted Fire Marshal Bill Baldwin said today.
Representatives from General Motors, the vehicle's manufacturer plan, are scheduled to arrive in Barkhamsted this evening to examine the car, Baldwin said.
The hybrid electric car was not plugged in this morning when the fire rekindled, Baldwin said.
The first fire, which occurred last Thursday about 5 a.m., destroyed the attached garage, the Chevrolet Volt and a Suzuki vehicle that had been converted so that it too ran on electricity. The homeowners had apparently plugged both vehicles in for recharging when Thursday's fire broke out.

Wonder how many volts a Volt recharge pulls?
OHHHH!!! I wanna car that will burn my house down and catch on fire later too!
Lord Steve said I need one of these and to trade my old clunker in for it.
The car sums up Obama perfectly / Just when you think he’s done enough damage, he does even more without any provication.
1. Extra heat for winter driving.
2. For smokers, no cigarette lighter needed.
3. Coming soon, mandated 'Park and Burn' parking spaces.
4. Purchase on July 3rd and enjoy a spectacular July 4th.
Why is the Fire Marshal not looking into this but letting GM do it. Smacks of letting the fox guard the hen house.
"Not as bad as the Hindenburg!"
"Combines the fun of driving and fire-fighting!"
"Comes with a one year supply of SPF 200..."
"It's a car! It's a microwave!"
I wonder when the MSM enemedia will pick up this story. /sarc
If the reignited fire was caused by the volt automobile,- does that mean it would be called “revolting?”
A green vehicle. “It recycles itself into carbon!”
(.)bama’s plan to aid the home construction industry: the Volt.
That’s not only funny but precise.
How did that garage fire impact the environment? Liberal ignorance is epic.
The “Volt’s Role”? He was playing Marc Antony. “I come here not to praise Caesar, but to burn his garage down.” It just doesn’t get any better than the classics.
This is proof of the advance of technology brought to you by GM. With the old Pinto someone had to ram you before it would burst into flame. But the new PintoVolt will burst into flame while standing still in the garage. Be the envy of car bombers everywhere and shell out $41,000 for the new PintoVolt by Government Motors. /sarc
I wonder that in the last days of the Roman Empire or the waning moments of WW2 in Germany people joked because it was just too too sad to simply cry. The insanity in this country just has to stop !
I am a firefighter and I would tell my crew to stage a perimeter protection and wear full turnout gear and SCBA within 100 feet of the inferno....
Saving the environment ping
Nothing to see here.
Anyone with two Hybrids is in danger of being fatally smug.
I wish you hadn’t posted that. Suicide bombers everywhere will want one. Of course that might be good for GM.
Thanx for the ping raybbr !
So the dolt get’s 93 MPG(on electric)...AND smoke a pork butt in 93 minutes???...great deal!
Not volts, amps. Amps are the actual current flow. Volts is the “pressure”. Good question though. I would guess that the charger had a built in regulator that would limit the amperage to whatever the wiring and/or battery were rated for.
I’m guessing it would be pretty easy for any experienced fire investigator to determine the origin of the fire.
No need to spend that kinda bucks. My 95 F150 did the same thing about 6 AM on a Sunday morning sitting in front of my house. Ford said TS, file a claim with my insurance. They are all crooked as a dogs hind leg.
Yes amps. Got caught up in the rhyme, but when people have another item that has to be plugged in for long periods of time, it will increase the possibility of overloaded circuits, or problems with faulty outlets. I’d guess it pulls at least a few amps. And if the things stay on for the entire charge (not on and off like a refrigerator), that would make problems even more likely.
Because the Fire Marshal got his marching orders from the Government to back off. See Atlas Shrugged Part I.
Who is John Galt?
