Were all entitled to believe what we want to believe. There are people out there who insist that Roger Maris is still the single-season home run champ and Hank Aaron is still the all-time home run champ. I hold no more of a grudge against people who think that stuff than I hold for someone who thinks that Dick Sergeant was the better Darren on Bewitched. As long as they concede that it is only their opinion, and not a matter of fact or official standing, no worries. Which, in the case of Bonds and the record book it is not, nor will it ever be according to Bud Selig:
"Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig will not consider changing Barry Bonds records following the sluggers conviction on obstruction of justice last week In life theres always got to be pragmatism, Selig said Thursday at his annual meeting with the Associated Press Sports Editors. I think that anybody who understands the sport understand exactly why.
We understand it because, even before there were steroids, there were differences in context across eras. Some that just sort of happened (big ballparks, dead balls), some were imposed by the wrongdoing of men (steroids, segregation). While we can make a lot of adjustments, we cant quantify the exact amount that any given record was affected by different conditions with anything close to precision. The margin for error in such adjustments is larger, in most cases, than the differences between two similar accomplishments separated by decades. In light of this, to mess with the record book in any official way is madness. Appropriate to its name, let it simply record what happened.

There’ll always be controversy in baseball, just like there will always be corruption in DC.. and I don’t mean at the Senators ballpark.
* him ..
so it's ok to cheat?
I’ve said from the beginning that all I care about is keeping Barry Bonds (and all the known PHD users) out of The Baseball Hall of Fame. I will get my wish, the voters have no patience for the cheaters.
I think an asterisk by the Homerun records would be appropriate.
I remember when people thought there should be an asterisk next to Roger Maris 61, since he played a full 18 games more than Babe Ruth.
Selig is a moron.
Where’s Judge Landis when you need him?
I stopped paying real attention to baseball in 1994.
Was Selig the moron that declared the All Stars game a tie?
The very same.
When the American League expanded in 1961, the season was changed from 154 games to 162. In 1927, when Ruth hit 60 home runs, he played in 151 of the 154 games. In 1961, Maris' record-breaking year, he played in 161 games.
Ok, so a season was 8 games more.
His 1921 and 1927 seasons are the two best ever. Look at these numbers:
1921: Avg. .378 HR 59 RBI 171
1927: Avg. .356 HR 60 RBI 164
Damn.
I suspect...if all holds true and Bonds with his PHD buddies never make the HOF, then it’s biggest possible asterisk that a guy could ever devise. We will likely get to a point where only six out of the top ten home run leaders make it to the HOF. That by itself might make people stand there and think who leads and manages the major leagues....and how their leadership screwed up the game.
Bonds will always be followed by as asterisk.
I quit the year of no World Series and haven’t looked back.
I couldn’t name 5 current ballplayers for money.
I don’t know who won the batting title last year.
As a matter of fact, I don’t know who won the series.
Selig nor Barry have any balls!
