A New Mexico woman is dead after being mauled by her neighbors pit bulls.
Margaret Salcedo was walking in her Truth or Consequences neighborhood Sunday afternoon when the four pit bull mixes attacked.
Witness Laura Russell heard the commotion and immediately called 911. She says Salcedo tried to grab her phone, but a dog bit her arm and she dropped it.
Authorities think the attack lasted at least three minutes.
An officer quickly arrived on scene and shot into the air to scare the dogs.
When one dog charged at the officer, he shot and killed it. The other dogs ran off.
Police say Salcedo was conscious at the scene.
They thought she was going to live, but she was later overcome by her injuries.
"I think it's like living in the Middle Ages where you hate to go outside because the wolves are going to eat your grandchildren," says neighbor Elizabeth Stout.

Feed the owners to other pit bulls and let’s see how they like it. The owners were the animals and should be treated as such.
Shoot the dogs; hang the owners - and this crap will stop PDQ.

Not every dog is screwed up, but there is something psychologically different about many, many pit variants:
they just snap, and attack.
They are extremely difficult to read before they do this,
and they attack other animals and children.
There are lots of sweet, friendly pits, but among them are some psychos - with extraordinary power and fury.
My good friend had to put one down recently after spending all kinds of money and time trying to get her to stop attacking other animals (and lunging at kids.) It’s too risky to own a dog like that. Sweet dog... Until the snap.

(former trainer, dog lover, owner of some 16 dogs in my lifetime, and a guy whose children know how to generally tell the mood of a dog, what the pit variants “generally” look like, and know to STAY AWAY. )
And you never know until the "snap" happens, when it's too late. They are always such "peaceful, loving" dogs for their whole lives - before they go psycho.
I read that dogs of any breed can have ‘lesions’ on the brain that causes unpredictable violence and that the pit variants were selectively cross bred to increase the occurrence/likelihood of getting a dog with that brain deformation. So while the trait exists across dog breeds it has been concentrated to occur much more often in the pit variants. This lesion and the traits selected for the ‘ideal’ pit line included the ‘attack without warning’ trait. So yes, I too know people who have had 2 or 3 pits in a row without incident. But it is Russian Roulette unless you can check your dog’s brain for lesions. I do not doubt that there are pits without lesions or unpredictable behavior but way too many do have those traits and it may only become noticeable under tragic circumstances. Sometimes I gotta wonder if owners who are 100 percent confident of their dog despite the breed description are just unaware of what their dog is contemplating when frustrated or feeling threatened - the breed was developed to give no warning before attack. Like those families who say the dog was cuddly and obedient right up until he flipped out. When I read about this woman, I just couldn’t imagine fighting off a dog pack thinking ‘you mean THIS is how I’m gonna die!?”
My sweet cat was killed by a wandering pit last week.
It was absolutely huge, unneutered (obviously so) and wandering free. I don’t blame the dog. I am furious at the owner. And just glad the lady next door to me that sits out on the porch with her newborn all the time wasn’t there that afternoon.
It’s what they were bred to do, they are programmed to be the bull attacking dogs.
Funny how the anecdotal stories you hear in the news portraying pitbulls as being sweet and lovable are invariably based on observations up to but not including the moment they mauled someone to death.
As the lady in the video aptly expresses, you'd expect this type of peril in the Dark Ages, but it's inexcusable in a modern community.
It's telling that pit bulls are dog of choice for drug dealers/traffickers. No other dog would have the vicious attack response that these have.
If a major dog breeding society wanted to research into making “tamer” pit bulls, it would be welcome.
Many other large dogs are known for vicious surprise attacks as well.
Talked to a guy who lived in the woods and said he bred dogs for fighting. I asked if they were born to fight or had to be trained . He responded that some are, but those that are not are given gun powder in their food. He claimed it altered their brains and made them mean crazy. I seem to think he had eaten some of it himself.
“Woman killed after pit bull attack”? That makes it sound like she attacked the pit bulls, and then someone killed her.
What’s more dangerous, a single round fired into the air that has a infinitesimally small chance of hitting anyone, or four pits mauling someone right now? Dogs attacking a person or any prey item is a swirling mass of agitated flesh, and really not a good target to fire into if there is a human being underneath there.
The officer might have fired into the air but he got those pits off the woman and at least one of them attacking him. The distraction/redirection of aggression worked.
Tragic that the woman died anyway.

I have a friend who literally THREW her baby on top of the car to get her away from a charging pit. She then kicked the dog in the face, HARD, when it got to her. She finally had to climb up on top of the car with her child till neighbors came. I cannot imagine the fear she must have experienced.
