But Michael? Really? I have a couple of Michaels in the cousin category, not to mention friends.

Michael means "Who is like God?" (gift from God) in Hebrew.

We considered our Michael a gift from God when he was born. When he was in high school seven of his 3-2 baseball team members were also named Michael. Most mischevious bunch of boys ever assembled in one place.

But that is the key element. People in the West have generally lost the ties to family (ancestors) that perpetuate names, or the idea that names have meaning.

So we are bombarded with a procession of meaningless names which are mere sound orchestration--and not even always that with good effect.
