I often wonder that if John Wayne were alive today, what would he think/do/say regarding the current events of the world. Not just the current regime in DC and Congress, but Iraq, Afghanistan etc....

My brother is a Hollywood comedy writer - he once wrote jokes for John Wayne’s Oscar appearance around 1971. Although his autographed photo is getting somewhat yellowed, it still hangs proudly in his kitchen.
If John Wayne were alive today he would probably be making some more awful movies. I know he is beloved and while I am sure he was a really good guy, as long as you weren’t married to him, his acting skills were awful.
“Well ah rite then pilgrim”. There are JW movies on cable all the time, there was one on last night, no one has to go without JW.
Why would he need those guys? After all, he won WWII all by himself.
You are a true jackass. I’m constantly amazed at people who obviously have no connection to the theatre or film world and yet mail in their stupid opinions about acting. John Wayne was a fine actor and a great personality. And don’t show your ignorance by quoting erroneously from the wonderful classic film “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.” “Ah rite then pilgrim,” indeed.

John Wayne may have been an actor, but many of his off screen remarks and not a small amount of his money were dedicated to conservative causes.

And no, he was not typecast. He chose his roles very carefully - he and his wonderful directors formed his on-screen personality. The only thing that the Duke wanted to play and didn’t have the opportunity - at this is the truth - is Noel Coward! He loved the plays of Noel Coward and actually wanted to do one. The closest he came, I guess, was wrecking havoc on the Brits in “Brannigan”!
I love it! Remember how he took down lib reporter David Janssen in The Green Berets?
Another thing I like about “The Duke”. He loved to sail. He was a man of the sea. If you put a gun to my head and made me pick my favorite John Wayne movie, it would probably be “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance”. One of the more underrated movies ever made. It had a lot of deep running themes that have relevance today.

It’s too bad he died before Ronald Reagan became President. You can imagine he would have been over to the White House a lot yucking it up with Ronny about old time Hollywood. He died much too young. And I remember crying bitterly when John Wayne died. As a teenager close to joining the Marine Corps, it was a hard thing to do to cry. But cry I did.
The problem is, John Wayne was a two-bit hack with a gimp leg, who was woefully unintelligent, politically inane, and utterly talentless in every way. I have no idea how he rose to prominence, with so many GOOD actors out there. John Wayne makes me projectile-vomit!
