I have a nephew that was raised by leftists. Dad is a card-carrying member of the Communist Party, mom is a public school teacher. I wouldn’t say that they raised their son in a genderless environment, but it was an anti-masculine environment. Even his name could double as a girl’s name. No competitive toys, nothing that could be mistaken for a weapon, no athletic endeavors at all.
He grew into a socially awkward kid who spent his pre-school years getting stuffed into trash cans for having a girl’s name. Eventually, he chose to go by a nickname that would not incur the wrath of bullies. He’s now an adult, obsessed with Japanese anime...oh...and he’s gay. Go figure.
As a side note, before my husband and I had children he had a discussion with his sister, the mother of this poor boy. My husband made it clear that we would absolutely enforce gender roles on our children. Her response was that all our daughters would be whores, and all our sons would be rapists. Well, we have one modest young lady and one red-blooded American male. I think we’ve done just fine.

Exactly right. I am usually for parents raising kids as they see fit, but this seems to be completely out of the realm of what any normal person would think is healthy child rearing. You just cannot take people and experiment with them and see if they turn out ok.

remembering college psychology, there was some shrink that put their child in a sterile cube with the absolute minimum of human needs with no outside inflence.
net result?
nobody knows, the rumor was the child ended up with serious issues. no social or coping skills.
While it was probably a pain in the neck, it was probably overall better when people mostly all lived in the same place for generations, moms, grandmoms, greatgrandmoms and everyone was in your business. This kind of stupidity would be snuffed out because the rest of the family would see to it.
Well, I suppose some people would leave and form weird little groups, but they would be very unsuccessful and die out. It would be sad for their kids.

I had to look it up, because I recalled the story exactly as you did. His daughter is still alive and disputes the sterile cube and abuse. She doesn’t sound crazy. Honestly I know we studied Skinner in my Psych classes and the Skinner Box (which are not the same thing as what he is supposed to have put his daughter in) but I don’t recall if the story of his daughter ever came up there, or if I read about that somewhere else.
