For decades, it's been the gold-standard treatment for the most distressing of mental health disorders: mania, schizophrenia, major depression.
But now, lithium - the third element of the periodic table and an essential constituent of soil, oceans and every living organism - is being heralded as the next fluoride: an additive with such therapeutic potential, it should be ingested by millions of Americans every time they pour a glass of drinking water.
It's a provocative prospect that research suggests might reduce rates of suicide, violent crime, and hard drug use.
The idea gained widespread traction in 2009 when researchers studying 18 communities in Japan concluded that areas whose water supplies contained higher natural levels of lithium were significantly less vulnerable to suicide.

There’s a town here in west metro Atlanta called Lithia Springs, named such because of the lithium found in the spring. The cherokee used the water as a health tonic, and during the early 1900’s, there was a resort at the spring.
I have an idea. We’ll put Lithium in hand-held devices and trick people into holding them up to their heads, and then radiate the Lithium into their brains with electromagnetism.
Oh yes it’s real. They took the lithium out of 7up a long time ago though. (not sure why).
lithium has been used to treat neurological causes of mania/ hyperactivity in rare cases (we had a retarded hyperactive client who only calmed down after starting lithium).
but lithium in bipolar doesn’t make them sleepy as much as cuts the intensity of cycles so they are not so “high” or “low”
