Moody men are more attractive than happy men
New Scientist ^ | 25 May 2011 | Helen Thomson, biomedical news editor

A man walks into a bar, catches a girl's eye, and immediately looks gloomy, moody and averts his eyes. The woman is overcome with sexual attraction. Not your usual love story but maybe a more realistic one. Turns out, a winning smile isn't the way to a woman's heart; men who swagger and look gloomy are more likely to set pulses raising.

That's according to Jessica Tracy at the University of British Columbia, Canada, who asked more than 1000 adults to rate the sexual attractiveness of hundreds of photos of the opposite sex.

The images showed men and women in various displays of happiness, with big smiles and puffed out chests or shameful glances, lowered heads and averted eyes.

In an interview with UK newspaper The Daily Telegraph, co-author Alec Beall, also at British Columbia said: "We did not ask participants if they thought these targets would make a good boyfriend or wife - we wanted their gut reactions on carnal, sexual attraction."

The study found that women were not attracted to smiling, happy men, preferring those who looked proud and powerful or moody and ashamed.

That’s the age-old “bad boys get the gals” theory.

Then there’s “aloof and seemingly unobtainable” is attractive because women want men they can’t have and vice-versa.

This article seems to reinforce two general assumptions:

1. Women are sexually attracted to bad boys.

2. Women have the innate desire to want to fix what (they perceive) is wrong with a man.

I've always wondered why so many women that have been with an alcoholic drunk that bats them around every now and then, will finally leave him after years of abuse and find another man with the same problem to hitch up with??? I think that those women have a low esteem of themselves problem and there is always the ones that think they can change the person. Poor things are about as sick as the men they keep.

I used to meet the most women when I was by myself and completely silent. They’d come to me if I sat there long enough. So I think there might be something to this.

It’s very true. Women love moody men. I married one. Then I found out he was bipolar, and that was a barrel of monkeys, let me tell you.

But I did get a serious, deep, reflective man, a musician capable of great emotion and love. It was the crazy that came with all that, that stretched me out.

I think that those women have a low esteem of themselves problem and there is always the ones that think they can change the person.

I wonder if that is what is called "projection", i.e. one has an inner problem that they project onto another, so they attempt to fix the other person, rather than focus on fixing themself.

“Happy guys tend to want to please, which is a sign of weakness and submission.”

It's the other way around. Happy guys are happy because things are going well. They are getting some or simply don't care about getting any, otherwise they would not be happy. This means they are not going to put out a special effort for a woman. Why should they? They are happy at the way things are.

Moody guys are moody and unhappy because — well, call it hydraulic pressure. So to fix that problem if they see an attractive woman (and the level of attractiveness necessary drops as hydraulic pressure and unhappiness increases) they put out a special effort to attract that woman.

Given a choice between someone who basically ignores you or someone who puts out an effort, which man would a woman find more attractive — even if the guy ignoring her is happy and the guy putting out an effort is moody and unhappy?

Women who do manage to catch these fickle, moody Momma’s boys will likely marry in haste and repent at leisure. Conceited men are difficult and not much is likely to change short of the hand of God rebuking them. Also, Momma’s boys tend to continue endlessly looking for that “perfect” woman, and their idea of “perfect” changes about every 6 months. Of course, they think they “deserve” the “perfect” woman because Momma told them early on that no woman on earth was as great as her. If you run into the moody, conceited, detached man . . . RUN and keep on running.

It should be that way, but it is the jerks that more often gets the woman to go home with him for the night. Just go to any bar scene and watch who takes the women home.

I understand what your saying, but I think it’s more simple than that. I’ve played music in bands for 25 years and I’ve been in and out of every bar in this country at least twice.

The simple truth about such things, and you can take this to the bank, is that the guy that can stay awake the longest is who takes the girl home from the bar!

They can’t help it. It’s biologically built in for them to put men through stamina tests. Women in bars seem to think that God goes to bed around 3am and if they only wait that long they can get sneak one past him. :P

Totally scary and gloomy, even when he smiles.

*Perfect*.

1. Women are sexually attracted to bad boys.

Yes.

2. Women have the innate desire to want to fix what (they perceive) is wrong with a man.

Hell no because then they wouldn't be "bad" any more....;D

I can see that. I also am aware of that it also depends on whether or not a woman is in a phase of looking for a life partner or a quick lay.

A woman, for example, is thought to value humour because it represents a guys willingness to put thought into what he is saying, which represents his willingness to commit to her.

It’s been my experience that women do an incredibly good job of finding their “father” in a man. Especially if they have a dysfunctional one. An alcoholic is a classic example.
