I am not afraid of tarantulas - I think they are the only spider that has a ‘gentle disposition’. A couple years ago, “Harry” would come up to ‘visit’ me, every time I would sit on my porch at night. All I had to do, was say, “Harry?” and then whistle, and he would come up to the step, and just sit there and look at me. After about ten minutes, he would turn around, and leave - to go to his little bed. I even stopped traffic once, so no cars would hit a tarantula crossing the street. (And, NO - I have never touched one!)

"Wear Red" Friday
You will soon see a lot of people wearing Red on Fridays. Here's why..... The Americans, who support our troops, are the silent majority. We are not "organized" to reflect who we are, or to reflect what our opinions are. Many Americans, like yourself, and all their friends, simply want to recognize that Americans support our troops. Our idea of showing our solidarity and support for our troops is starting Friday and continuing on each and every Friday, until this is over, that every red-blooded American who supports our young men and women, WEAR SOMETHING RED.

Word of mouth, press, TV -- let's see if we can make the United States, on any given Friday, a sea of red much like a home football game at a University. If every one of our memberships share this with other acquaintances, fellow workers, friends, and neighbors, I guarantee that it will not be long before the USA will be covered in RED - and make our troops know there are many people thinking of their well-being. You will feel better all day Friday when you wear Red! So let's get the word out and lead by example; wear RED on Fridays.

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS! WE LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE, BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE. FOR US, THEIR BLOOD RUNS RED!! GOD BLESS AMERICA.

From an email on June 10th, 2006 - the author is unknown.

Luv and C_F, I think your tulips are beautiful!
I planted several hundred bulbs some years back,
and found out quickly that javelina
think they are dessert - and do a 'dig and devour' in a very short time.

They say that a preacher’s wife is always his number one assistant.

An example of this comes one Sunday morning after the preacher had just finished his sermon. He went and sat down with his wife and she asked him how he thought the church service went.

The Preacher shrugged and said, “The worship was excellent, and I think the prayer and communion times went quite well, but,” he continued, “I just don’t think the sermon ever got off the ground.”

The wife looked over at him, and before she could stop herself, she said, “Well, it sure did taxi long enough!”

“Future Price of Roses”

The young man ahead of my father at the flower shop was taking an unusually long time to place his order.

When the clerk asked how she could help, he explained that his girlfriend was turning 19 and he couldn’t decide whether to give her a dozen roses or 19 roses — one for each year of her life.

The woman put aside her business judgment and advised, “She may be your 19-year-old girlfriend now, but someday she could be your 50-year-old wife.”

The young man bought a dozen roses.

Pun

“Urgent Code 33”

It was April 1st, and in a small midwestern town, two rookie policemen were patrolling the downtown business area. They decided to stop into the local coffee shop for a coffee and a donut. The time was 11:55 AM.

Three minutes later, they got a call on their police radio: “Code 33 in progress, man in bank dressed as a banana.”

Well, there was only one bank in town, in fact, it was just across from the coffee shop. A code 33 was an “armed robbery” but it was also just 11:58 AM and the two rookies decided it was the dispatcher playing a joke on them just before lunch. So they continued enjoying their coffee break.

At 12:01 PM, they got a second call on their radio, “Repeat, Urgent, code 33 in progress, man in bank dressed as a banana.”

Realizing it was past noon and the dispatcher sounded frantic, they rushed across the street — but arrived 30 seconds after the banana split.

American Flag Info

What do the red, white, and blue of the flag represent?
The Continental Congress left no record to show why it chose the colors. However, in 1782, the Congress of the Confederation chose these same colors for the Great Seal of the United States and listed their meaning as follows: white to mean purity and innocence, red for valor and hardiness, and blue for vigilance, perseverance, and justice. According to legend, George Washington interpreted the elements of the flag this way: the stars were taken from the sky, the red from the British colors, and the white stripes signified the secession from the home country. However, there is no official designation or meaning for the colors of the flag.

Why are the stars in a circle?
The stars were in a circle so that no one colony would be viewed above another. It is reported that George Washington said, “Let the 13 stars in a circle stand as a new constellation in the heavens.”

Why would Betsy Ross be chosen to make the flag?
It was usual in that day for upholsterers to be flagmakers. As Betsy Ross prayed in the pew next to George Washington and had already sewn buttons for him, and she was a niece of George Ross, it is not exceptional that these members of the Flag Committee formed by the Continental Congress would call upon Betsy Ross to make the flag.

Where is the first flag?
No one knows what happened to the first flag. Very few flags from that time have survived.

Why is the flag called “Old Glory”?
In 1831, Captain William Driver, a shipmaster from Salem, Massachusetts, left on one of his many world voyages. Friends presented him with a flag of 24 stars. As the banner opened to the ocean breeze, he exclaimed, “Old Glory.” He kept his flag for many years, protecting it during the Civil War, until it was flown over the Tennessee capital. His “Old Glory” became a nickname for all American flags.

Who was Mary Pickersgill?
Mary Young Pickersgill sewed the very large (30’x42’) Star-Spangled Banner in the summer of 1813. It flew over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 (1812-1814) and was the inspiration for Francis Scott Key to write what would become our National Anthem. Pickersgill’s flag today hangs at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. Her house still stands as a museum you can visit in Baltimore, Maryland.

Jane, I so agree about the impact of the visual. Thinking of the old proverb "A Picture is worth a thousand words" meaning: "A picture tells a story just as well as a large amount of descriptive text."

It seems to me when our eyes view a lovely picture, something wonderful happens in the brain, making us smile and feel better. I think we remember that beautiful visual much better than several paragraphs describing the same thing. (just my opinion.)

Impact For Christ
June 4, 2011

Over the past several years, I’ve been privileged to travel with teenagers on eight mission trips. One thing I’ve learned in those excursions is that teens are not too young to make an impact for Jesus—either on me or on others whose lives they touch.

I’ve also noticed that the teens who make the biggest impact for Christ match the characteristics Paul told Timothy about in 1 Timothy 4:12. Trying to convince Timothy that his relative youth did not have to be a deterrent to his ministry, Paul told him to “be an example to the believers” in several areas.

In word: Young people who make a difference for Christ control what they say, avoid negative talk, and speak words that honor God. In conduct: Teens who practice discretion in their behavior shine for all the world to see. In love: By taking heed of Jesus’ words to love God and their neighbor (Matt. 22:37-39) teens please Jesus and touch hearts. In faith: Those who put their faith into action change lives. In purity: It’s tough to be morally pure and doctrinally sound, but kids who are can set the bar for the rest of us.

Paul’s words aren’t just for the young generation. All of us should be an example in word, conduct, love, faith, and purity. That’s how we make an impact for Christ.

O Christians, remember, you bear His dear name,
Your lives are for others to view;
You’re living examples—men praise you or blame,
And measure your Savior by you. —Anon.

The most valuable commentary on the Bible is a godly life.

Read: 1 Timothy 4:10-16

Be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, . . . in faith, in purity. —1 Timothy 4:12
Bible in a year:
2 Chronicles 21-22; John 14
