We need citizens in the Castle Doctrine states to announce on Facebook that they are going on vacation for a week. Then stay home with a shotgun handy. We could eliminate many of the meth users in the country that way.

Also, NOT receiving a phone call from the security monitoring company while out of town, in itself brings a certain level of peace of mind...which is ALWAYS welcome when away and trying to relax or not worry about what’s going on at home.

Depending on where you live you might want to be careful turning down the setpoint on the thermostat in winter. The combination of lower temperatures in the house and the water not moving in the pipes gives it the best chance of freezing and bursting the pipes. Automatic ice makers are also pretty good sources of revenue for companies that do insurance work.

Coming home to find that you have to have everything you own taken out of your house is almost as bad as finding it already gone.

When did this no mail slot rule take effect? I had one installed about five years ago; no one said anything to me about them being illegal.

And how does the carrier get injured from a mail slot?

Things sure have changed since the days that my grandmother would keep a ten dollar bill on the front foyer table, so that upon returning home, she'd know if she'd been burgled--or might encounter a thief still inside--to today's dangerous times and redily-available high tech protection. Not that my grandmother's method is obsolete--it's great timeless low-tech--but with the endless combinations of the latest security methods available today, why would anyone NOT have at least a good basic instant-alert system to help guard their most basic possessions and identity (personal papers.)

Sadly, times have gone from Mayberry to Johannesburg, where every half mile, it seems, you see a security system company. :-/

When I was in college, after I returned from a dance, I walked into my dorm room and every last thing of mine was gone...bed, desk, clothes, half the lightbulbs and curtains, books...everything. Eventually I got everything back but my bowling shoes. And they were my lucky shoes. Never could bowl well after that.

Got a friend who takes his ‘danes camping...lets them sleep inside his (almost new) camper. Needless to say it is a bit the worse for wear after only one year. I keep telling him he needs to get a horse trailer!

This is not a new method, to be sure. This one has been around since the 1980’s, maybe before.

We’ve used young ladies from church, usually a couple of sisters. We’ve also let it be known at church that we’ll be gone on x day until y day and if anyone has visiting family they can use our place. We’ve also had young marrieds from church house sit. The only thing we’ve ever lost is one parakeet which the young married’s dog ate. They were horrified but it was an old well used parakeet.

I live in a semi-rural area of maine.

A few years ago I bought a used car. I brought it home and jumped into my old vehicle and went off to run errands.

Within ten minutes I got a phone call from a neighbor alerting me to a strange truck in my yard. I told them it was mine. their reply was;

“Oh.OK, can we come over and check it out?

At least since 1998. Apparently your letter carrier doesn’t care. The theory is that the letter carrier can be injured bending down. Besides, opening the screen door takes time.

I remember years ago when my older siblings were married that we got a neighbor kid to house-sit for the wedding day. (Lots of presents in the house for my sisters as well!).

Although looking back, getting some 13 year old to watch the house? “Here’s the phone kid. Dial 911 in case any robbers break into the house!”

Yeah... I hear ya. I had my Colt (.45 ACP) and a couple of spare mags.... plus, across the road 60 yards away and JUST on the other end of a radio was my oldest son with one of the AR-15s. No badguys showed up, and that suited me just fine. :-)

The slot is in the garage door. All the carrier has to do is walk up a short driveway to the door and push the mail through the slot. The slot is at a good height; so the carrier shouldn’t have to bend down. I live in a small suburb. I know the three guys at the local post office. I’ve had the same carrier since I moved into my house in 1989. He has even brought heavy packages into my house, and I know he’s not really supposed to. One of the nice things about living outside the city is that they’re willing to bend the rules if it means helping a steady, disabled customer.
