Android Extends Lead in Mobile

The latest ComScore results from the last quarter are in, and the US mobile device wars were hotter than ever as 13% more people reported owning a smartphone. Google conquered most users' territory with Android climbing just over five percent (now totaling 36.4%) and still claiming first for mobile software platforms. Apple's iOS destroyer took second place (at 26%) partially due to RIM's S.S. BlackBerry OS sinking about five percent (now 25.7%) to claim third, while Microsoft and HP / Palm rounded out the bunch struggling to stay in the fight with even lower single-digit scores. In the OEM region Samsung claimed first yet again (although slightly dropping to 24.5%), with LG and Motorola landing in second and third respectively, each keeping its place from the prior quarter. In the last two slots, Apple again bested RIM whose devices barely dropped half of a percent, but enough to let the slight growth of iDevices snatch up 4th. The source link below is waiting to be clicked if you want the full battle statistics.

And with Apple shamelessly now taking features from Android for iOS 5, Google is now smelling blood in the water.

But yet you have Apple suing Samsung because of similarities between phones. Funny.

I love my Android PDA/Phone — it almost anticipates what I want to do. I just wish it would look at my contacts before checking the internet when I use vocal commands.

It is a lot more flexible than the iPhone my wife has.

But if they keep competing to make the better UI, I wait eagerly the result.

I think you might just have a settings issue. If I remember correctly, you can set the search perimeters for google searches/voice commands.

What version of Android are you using and which phone?

Perhaps Google will want an advance look at all future iPhones to make sure Apple isnt copying them?

If it good for the goose...

Pro 3.8.7 — I think you might be right... but there are so many tuning knobs I just can’t find them all.

when windows releases the mango edition of their phone operating system, I predict windows’ market share will surge up to 15%+. Probably at blackberry expense.

The good news for Microsoft is they will probably hit 15% global market share when Nokia makes the switch. The bad news for Nokia is that they will probably have a 15% global market share when they make the switch.

Did you see the big revolt when HTC announced they were going to lock their new Android phones...HTC backed down and now will not lock... the great thing about Android is you can build custom ROM’s for your phone...

Apple is like it or lump it

Exactly.

I only run custom ROMs on my phones. People stuck on stock don't know what their missing or what their phones are truly capable of. The carriers gimp their stock ROMs which disable so much functionality.

There's a small learning curve to installing custom ROMs, but if I can figure it out, anybody should be able to.

Is there a site you recommend to make a custom ROM?

I thought windows phone 7 was pretty much dead in the water.

I have even seen a rumor posted that the OS was going to be phased out.

OK -- had to go see what in 'L you're all talking about.

I got really po'd at Verizon because they killed several options that should have been available on my phone - like the PIM. They claimed their online junk was better - not so if you don't have connectivity! Admit I was spoiled by my company's BB that I lost after I retired. Not sure I need one of the new gizmo's now, though, but look interesting.

....Then for hard core http://www.xda-developers.com/

But read, read, read, the old forums post's first before you answer your questions... because the worst thing you can do at these sites is be a newbee asking the same old questions that have been ask and answered a hundred time before in the forms...they will flame your ass faster then a DU troll on FR

You don’t actually make the ROM. There are developers that make the ROMs for free. They accept donations for their work.

This is the best site by far.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/filter.php?cat=Android

Find your device section and start educating yourself on how to do it. Most phones have threads dedicated how to flash a custom ROM step by step. Use the Q&A thread to ask questions. Make sure you follow directions EXACTLY. Flashing incorrectly can “brick” your phone and make it a permanent paperweight.
