Doesn’t San Fran have a living wage law on the books? If so, these employees are living high on the hog! /s

You probably do not live here in SF so forget that minimum wage argument. What employees here want is a clear and obvious way to progress within an organization and a chance to advance since many enjoy retail. However, hiring mostly part-time is often a convenient way for SF companies to keep from paying basic benefits and avoiding scheduling conflicts. For one, it allows them to ignore requests for days off even if requested way in advance.

Retail employees job status reflect the current poor job market situation, they are not the cause. Even if SF part timers are very well educated as compared to other parts of the country,- (which they are), their dilemma is having to accept low paying part-time jobs on poor terms since that is all that is available. The companies here enjoy what is often called ‘perfect competition’. It is not a union issue, but if companies are not responsive, well........
