A hundred twenty-five years ago, Bavaria's "Maerchenkoenig" (or "Fairy-tale King") Ludwig II died under very mysterious circumstances at the age of 40, his body found floating in Lake Starnberg, south of Munich. Today, Ludwig remains famous for the castles he built and attempted to build, most notably Neuschwanstein Castle, perched high in the Alpine foothills.

Spectacular.

God help us if the Muslims get control of Europe’s magnificent Catholic cathedrals, museums and castles.

I’m very weak on German history, any recommended tomes?

I drove by Neuschwanstein several times while stationed in Europe. It looks like something out of a Disney fairy tale. I’ve got a really great picture of it.

Agreed, great photography. Brought back many memories of visiting there while in the US Army. Thanks for posting...

The story goes that Walt Disney loved it so much he used it as inspiration for the them park castles...so yeah...

There's an old German drinking song about Ludwig - I don't remember it because I last participated 20 years ago, and wasn't anything close to sober when I learned it, but it pays homage to the fact that Ludwig was a little...off...

That's because Disney modeled their castle off of Neuschwanstein. Hint if you actually go: Either wear good walking shoes or pay for a ride up. It's a long way.

Gordon Craig’s Germany 1866-1945 is the standard tome, and a good long summer read.

We were there a few years back. The English tour was not until afternoon, so we opted for the German one. They spoke really fast with lots of adjectives I had not yet learned in German III.

You wonder if it wasn't this kind of stuff that inspired Tolkein. Neuschwanstein Castle practically screams Arnor or Gondor.
