An extreme eight-week diet of 600 calories a day can reverse Type 2 diabetes in people newly diagnosed with the disease, says a Diabetologia study.
The 11 participants in the study were all diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes within the previous four years.
Newcastle University researchers found the low-calorie diet reduced fat levels in the pancreas and liver, which helped insulin production return to normal.
Three months after the end of the diet, when participants had returned to eating normally and received advice on healthy eating and portion size, most no longer suffered from the condition.

The Atkins diet is low carb and high fat (not high protein). Some people get 85% of their calories from fat and successfully lose weight and show healthy lipid profiles.
The least healthful fats are PUFAs and PHFAs, the fats that the government has been pushing for 30 years.
Fats That Heal, Fats That Kill by Udo Erasmus
And there are several other books that reinforce the body chemistry reactions to the different fats in this one.
“There is nothing wrong, nor unhealthful, with eating animal fat. “
You are kidding right??? I agree that there is nothing wrong per se with eating animal fat, but to say it is healthy is misguided at best and quite ignorant at worst. The Atkins diet is unsustainable...it will kill you early if you stay on it. That is why you are to be on it for short durations. Change your lifestyle to very low fat, whole foods along with 30 minutes per day moderate exercise and you will not only feel great, but you will live longer. BTW, no one, who eats 85% fat has healthy lipids, period. That is a real fairy tale.
PUFAs and PHFAs sound a little gay to me anyway.
You could not be more wrong, and your kind of thinking has led to the diabetes and obesity epidemic in our country. Eating that way does sell a LOT of drugs, surgery, and doctor appointments.
You are very ignorant about Atkins as well. Do not spout your nonsense about a perfect heart-healthy diet to me, for I know that you are uninformed, at best.
There is plenty of literature, in addition to the link I already gave you, that explains that you are wrong and why you are wrong, but you choose to parrot propaganda about animal fats as if God would provide food for us that is poison.
The poison is the polyunsaturated fatty acids and partially hydrogenated fatty acids, both man made, and both deadly. PHFAs are carcinogenic and slow-acting heart poison. They and PUFAs will mess up your cholesterol ratio.
I eliminated the fat from my diet during that stupid low-fat/fat-free craze, and I gained weight, developed high blood pressure, a morbid lipid profile, and Type II diabetes. My doctor recommended Atkins (in 1994), and I have been on it ever since. I’m 64 years old, and I would compare my blood pressure, lipid profile, and blood sugar to anyone’s. My triglycerides plummeted. My good/bad cholesterol ratio is perfect, and my total cholesterol number went from 300 to 168. This morning, my FBS was 88.
I am not unique.
How low have they gotten with the limit?
I ran into a situation a number of years ago - The faster I dropped my long-term level (A1C?), the faster they dropped the acceptable limit. (While it sure seemed to drop every time I got tested, it may not have really been getting changed that fast.)

You need to research more dear...you are absolutely wrong and it is proven by data for the past 100 years. I have reversed my diabetes and heart disease from a healthy very low fat, whole food diet and exercise lifestyle. You can too. Atkins is not a lifestyle choice...it is too unhealthy. It is a gimmick for temporarily losing weight in the short term and is too unhealthy to maintain for the long term.
Check into...Pritikin, CHIPS program, etc. and read about the tons of studies conducted over the years. It is eye opening and will add years to your life if you learn about it and make those lifestyle changes.
I am not your “dear.”
Thanks to Atkins, I do not have diabetes nor heart disease. Did you even read my post?
What part of “Atkins works perfectly for me” don’t you understand?
What part of “I tried your way, and it nearly killed me” don’t you understand?
What part of “my doctor put me on Atkins, and it worked like a charm” don’t you understand?
I wouldn’t go back to the discredited Pritikin (for God’s sake!) for a million dollars.
You have your studies, and I have mine. I know which ones are true and which are propaganda. The diabetes and obesity epidemics flamed wildly out of control when the government started pushing that no-fat CRAP on the American people, and sales of Metformin (a lean muscle mass destroyer) have never been better.
You are mistaken, really. But, I don’t like discussing things with people who are too dogmatic to try to understand the truth.
BTW, your doctor is a fool. You should find a real doctor to advise you.
My God! Do you realize how ridiculous your belief is? Have you been aware of studies done in Japan, China, etc. that have shown where people live on low fat diets they have little or no heart disease and diabetes and when they have high fat diets (and high sugar and salt like our diets) those diseases explode. There is absolutely no way possible you followed a low fat, whole food diet and had health problems with diabetes and heart disease. You are simply mistaken about how you ate, sorry.
Anyway, I am going to quit wasting time with you...you live the way you choose dear and I will live my way.
Enjoy your heart attack.
