Tom Petty Demands Michele Bachmann Stop Playing His Song
Gawker.com ^ | 6/28/11 | Jim Newall

Posted on 06/28/2011 2:46:59 PM PDT by NohSpinZone

The management for rock and roll star Tom Petty didn't waste any time after Bachmann's campaign launch yesterday to send a cease-and-desist letter, demanding that she never use his song "American Girl" at campaign events again. These requests are not uncommon for Republican candidates, and it's one of the things that genuinely sucks for them. They can never use the easygoing, overplayed songs that they enjoy on FM radio, and they learn that their favorite artists despise them. Democrats' problem, on the other hand, is that they have to feign gratitude to all the musicians who write bad songs for them, kind of like accepting the annual box of dirt-flavored hard taffy that grandmother gives you on birthdays.

Ha! We’re on the same wavelength! I immediately thought of it and posted it before I read the comments. I think Michele OR Sarah have the cajones for Stranglehold!

Depends on if Petty sold his “children”for “adoption” though, doesn't it? If the label owns the rights, fair use says he has no argument, and he should let the legal parents of his music raise his “kids”. He can rant and rave all he wants, but he already sold his “kids” to another “parent”, if that is the case.

If ‘one-sheet’ TP owns the rights to publishing, he can do as he sees fit. If he does not she can buy the rights from whoever does, play it according to the terms she bought usage rights for and he can bitch till the cows come home.

It comes down to who owns the rights.

Amazing how Petty goes from the one with the chosen song, to a no-talent ass clown overnight.

I wonder which genius on her campaign staff managed this?

Not many songs about Iowa or Idaho girls.

I wonder if Shania Twain would go along?

Some of her titles:

“You’re Still The One”

“The Woman In Me”

“I Ain’t No Quitter”

“She’s Just Not a Pretty Face”

I think Rush HAD paid for the rights to "My City was Gone" (or whatever the title is) but Hynde under pressure from leftists tried to yank it. I remember the few weeks when Rush used some other intro song. Then Hynde relented, after she found out that her parents LIKED Limbaugh. I'm disappointed with Petty, since nobody really was going to think he was "endorsing" Bachmann anyway.

Springsteen did this with Reagan over "Born in the USA", even though it's a a very anti-American tune. Not sure why the Reagan campaign didn't pick up on that. Mellencamp has also done this with republican candidates over politics. David Byrne of the Talking heads did this, but he stated that he doesn't want his music associated with ANY politics. I can actually respect that stance. When Michael Jackson bought the Beatles catalogue, he began to allow usage in TV commercials. Paul McCartney said it "bothered him heaps". But he didn't have standing since he sold the rights.

Any song Rush plays on the radio the writer gets paid. Typcically the singer only gets money off record/cd sales. At least that they way it used to be.

It makes one wonder how these washed up rockers find out about their songs being used for conservative canidates. I can just imagine that the liberal media and their sycophant spies attend conservative ralleys just to report to liberal idiots like Tom petty, or Heart.

This happens every election. Entertainers refusing to allow conservative politicians to use their music. Real heroes. How Tom Petty ever became a “rock star” is waaaay beyond my understanding. Maybe the same way Bob Dylan did.

But knock it off with this popular crap - these musicians HATE us, and will NEVER allow the use of their music. And even if there’s a legal right to use it, the artist will come out and bash the candidate anyway, leading to further humiliation.

Wonder if Ed Rollins picked this song?

“BUT...”

I’ve always thought Tom Petty sucked and have never spent one cent on him or his crappy “music”.

I must have a sixth sense about some of the lefty “entertainers” and spending money on their trash, BEFORE they inevitably come forth, and show their true color is leftwing HATE.

No ifs, ands or “BUTS”..

Actually, Petty made a ton of money last year.

http://www.forbes.com/pictures/eeel45ehmg/the-worlds-25-highest-paid-musicians#content

16. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers ($38 million)

Some acts seem to have an infinite shelf life on the road, and Tom Petty is one of them—the bulk of the band’s annual take comes from 46 dates over the past 12 months.

I wouldn’t. It’s time conservatives stop trying to placate the media. Ain’t gonna happen. If she paid for the rights to the song, then let them squawk. I heard the song yesterday on the news while she was campaigning in Iowa, and I thought, “Oh, oh. Watch Tom Petty complain.”
