I am only making the argument that Baytown is all that great, but it is better than Channelview; not that that is saying much.
Baytown is not going to win any awards for being an attractice city. Funniest comment I have heard about Baytown is that San Jacinto Mall is East Texas Avenue with a roof.
Houston are folks NGZ....trust em.

Before your sister accepts a job offer make sure her RN license is valid in TX (don’t know why it would not be, but better to be safe & all that). The energy business in Houston is starting to boom once again, so hopefully her friend really can get you a job. If not, there are many headhunting agencies here that will be able to assist you.
Where the two of you work should be part of your decision as to where to live. Houston is a very large city, so you don’t want to work to far from home. Your commute, no matter where you live will be a bear ~ I work 12 miles from home & it is a 30 minute commute on good days. Will it possible for you two to stay with her friend for a few weeks until you can find a place to live? If you are going to live in Houston proper, you really need to check out an area before moving there.
Also, as I have noticed a few FReepers suggested surrounding cities to Houston. That is a good idea, as most of those cities have a more hometown feeling. Some of the area towns are Katy, Sugar Land, Pearland, League City, The Woodlands, Spring and Tomball.
Regarding the weather. Yeah it is hot & humid in the Summer, but that is why all of us are grateful to the inventor of A/C. Our Spring & Fall’s are short but very pleasant. Our Winter last about four weeks, and those weeks are not necessarily in a row. It rarely snows, and when it does the snow does not last very long. A snow shovel is definitely not needed. We do get hurricanes once in a while, but we get fair warning & if you live inland the chances of damage are minimal. Once in a while there are tornadoes.
Regarding the landscape. The area is flat. No hills or mountains or curvy roads. But a few hours drive and you can be in the hill country ~ which is very lovely, especially in the Spring when the wildflowers bloom. We do have lots of trees & green grass (not so much green this year as we are in a drought).
