Girl with no arms and legs says cheerleading try-out is unfair after she fails to make school squad
Daily Mail ^ | 7/13/11 | John Stevens

Posted on 07/14/2011 2:31:36 PM PDT by Do Not Make Fun Of His Ears

Nebraska girl born with no arms and legs has blamed unfair scoring after she failed to make her school's cheerleading squad three years in a row.

Julia Sullivan, 16, has complained to the school board after she said she was given 'no accommodation for her disability' during try-outs.

The wheelchair user did not make the team after she received a low score in the jumps/kicks category of the trials.

Miss Sullivan got her highest marks in the communication skills and enthusiasm/spirit categories.

The Aurora High School student, who said that she likes to dance, said: 'I just think it would be fun.'

Maybe her parents are the kind who tell their child "you have no limitations!"

If so, they are doing her a disservice, and not preparing her for the real world.

The girl was ALLOWED to compete, and did not receive high enough marks in the areas required (jumping, kicking, etc). Surprise, surprise.

Another article on this says her parents are SUING the school. Another great example of poor parenting.

So, if she decides to run a track meet, the judges and rest of the competitors also have to factor in her disabilities, too?

I think it would be fun to fly fighter jets, but to quote my Dad, son he said, it ain't happening so get real. This kid is not being helped by her parents. Encouragement is fine, but you need to be realistic as well.

Gotta feel sorry for the kid. I'm sure there is a lot she could do. But an activity which requires a lot of jumping and kicking isn't one of them.

It reminds me of a joke floating around when we were kids. The boys go over to one of their armless, legless friends house and ask "Can Jimmy come and play baseball with us."

The Mom says, "Certainly not! You know Jimmy has no arms and no legs.

"We know," the kids protest "but we need a third base bag."

She is part of the new progressivism, Obama’s World.

1) Everyone is a winner.

2) No one keeps score, because everyone is equal.

3) If you don’t get your way, hire a lawyer and sue.

4) If it “sounds like fun,” then by golly, it’s your RIGHT. Elbow your way (pardon the pun) to the front of the line, and everyone else be damned.

5) The world OWES you.

Despite good intentions, one does need to know their limitations. As such, I am not seeing the unfairness of the cheerleading tryouts.

My heart goes out to her, but we all have to live the reality we are given.

God, grant me the serenity,
To accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference.

I pray our Creator grants her, and her parents, "wisdom". In Jesus' name, Amen.

With all due respect to the kid, cheer-leading, swimming team, tennis team and looking to join the volleyball team are not going to be in the cards.
She may invent something to defy gravity in ten years, you never know.

I wish her the best, but there is no problems from the school side.

This is nothing more than “affirmative action.”

I got cut from the basketball team AND the track team. I was terrible at both, though I was determined.

The coaches did me a favor.

It allowed me to find my strengths, REAL strengths, in other areas.

Hmm, I would say that she did not overcome her disability, they just accommodated it. I guess she expects the cheerleaders to do the same thing.

God bless you young Ms. Sullivan for trying. You aren’t meant to be that type of cheerleader. There are many other opportunities, and possibilities for cheerleading that don’t require such physical means as you are without.

Facts are to be faced, and dealt with wisely.

While I admire her for trying, if she can’t do the moves, she shouldn’t make the team. What next, try out for the basketball, soccer or swim team? Don’t those activities “discriminate” against the disabled as well?

She can’t jump. She can’t tumble (except out of her chair), she can run or dance or shake a pompom. And face it, she isn’t that pretty. Why would she think she has what it takes to be a cheerleader? This is akin to a mentally handicapped person suing to be on the Mathletics team yet they can barely add 2 and 2.
