Day 18 Burn ICU 12:54pm We just got word from Addison's second surgeon that the operation went well. She did great. They put the synthetic graft on her face and neck and were able to use her own skin for the grafting on her right hand and both wrists. Dr. Klein said that he will plan for Addie's third and, Lord willing, final surgery on August 1st. They will then graft Addie's own skin on her face. Dr. Klein did say they will be using her scalp, so we will have a bald little girl for quite a while. Those of you who know Addie know she was just starting to get her hair in. She was also growing it out so she could be like Rapunzel in Tangled.
I could be so sad for our little girl right now. Instead, I am quietly thanking God for sparing her life. Many of you may know there was a 15 car pile up on I-90 today. While faxing some papers at the nurses station this morning I saw this 9 year old girl get wheeled into a room. She looked awful. It was the little girl, the only person seriously injured in that accident. The looks on her parents faces are, I'm certain, what Dave and I looked like that first week when Addie could not breathe. It's so painful being here. You want to reach out and tell people it will be ok, but really it might not be ok. I don't know if that little girl will live or die.
So while I am mourning my daughters life before the accident, and while it is hard for me to accept that she will be scarred the rest of her life, and while I sit here and think about life 3 weeks ago and how perfect it was I can still thank God that I have my beautiful little girl. That she will someday function normal, that her attitude will be a light to many others. That she will still have a sweet spirit, a beautiful smile and a happy heart.

Details on how the accident happened from the family journal.
Many of you know, and some may not, that we had a terrible accident at our home last night (Saturday). After an awesome family day of summer shopping and yard work Dave and I and the kids all spent dinner on our back patio and then decided it would be a wonderful night for our first smore campfire. We waited and tried and tried for twenty minutes to get this fire going. We tried everything. Paper, kindling, wood, pine cones. Dave decided to get some sort of fuel to the fire. He added some and nothing. He added more and the can caught on fire causing a huge flash fire towards Tommy, Brooklyn, Addison and I. Immediately there were screams I saw Brookes hair on fire and scooped her up and patted her till the fire was out. Dave had already run Addie inside to the sink as her hair and clothes were on fire. By the time I got into the house, maybe 30 second later, there were still flames. I grabbed her and patted her down with a towel on the kitchen floor. Dave scooped up Brooke as I sat with Addie on the floor. Tommy saw all of this and was screaming and crying. Dave called 911 and the paramedics were there withing just a couple of minutes. They took Addie immediately tot he ambulance and started working on her. The second set of paramedics to Brookie. I was able to kiss Addie goodbye and the shut the door telling me they were having her airlifted to Harborview.
Fast forward to today (Sunday). Brooklyns burn were superficial. She was discharged this evening and went home with Grandma Sally. Addison is in the Burn Pediatric ICU. She does not look like Addie. She is swollen from her burns but mostly from all the fluid they give burn victims. We will know more tomorrow. They had to intubate her, she has a feeding tube, her face, ears, hands and arms are all burned. For now they tell us that her burns are worse on the wrists. They think her face should heal on its own. She is sedated. She can wiggle her precious little toes when asked.
This has been Dave and my hardest trial by far. While we would never question who God is and His almighty work we are asking why? We know there is no answer. Our beautiful babies have been hurt. Dave feels awful and needs to know that I love him with all my heart. He is the best daddy. We dont understand any of this. Its a nightmare that replays over and over in our minds.
This was a horrible accident. It took 2 seconds to change our entire lives.
Find a Shriner. Fast.
The Shriners have the best burn units and reconstruction in the country. Get her in and they can mitigate a lot of damage.
BTW: That synthetic graft is probably going to scar pretty badly. My daughter had it and her back is a mess. They might be able to help with that.
Prayers up for such a precious one
Thank you for the update. So thankful to the Lord for the good news. - Pray the little girl injured today in the car wreck will have a good outcome.
Prayers for Addie and the other little girl who was injured.
Prayers and more prayers up!!
Prayers for Addison and her family. I cannot imagine the stress, worry and fear that they are experiencing right now. This is a heartbreaking story and my best wishes go their way. ** You are a good friend, NavyCanDo. I am sure right now that they need all the support they can get.
My sincerest prayers offered for this angel.
The Strode family was also in the adoption process of a little boy that they love dearly, when the accident happened. The fear was that this accident would kill any chances of that adoption happening. I don’t know all the details but the State took the little boy from them, and they had to fight to get him back, while rotating their stay at the Hostpital by Addison’s side. That must have been horrible. The child is back in the home now, Thank God.
It’s amazing the damage one act can do.
God help her and her family.
More prayers .
Got any updates?
Regarding scarring - in the mid-sixties, one of my cousins, who was a toddler at the time, pulled on a tablecloth and dumped a glass carafe of coffee, being kept hot over a candle, all over himself. An aunt pulled his clothes off right then, which I’ve heard is the wrong thing to do, and he ended up with massive grafting. He has no scars at all, and I’m sure burn treatment/scar prevention have come a long way since then.
