I Don't Remember Hobbits Defeating A Geographical Location (Mordor)...

It has been quite a while since I read any of the four major books (among Tolkien's other books) that dealt with this saga. It has been quite a while since I have read any of Tolkien's books for that matter.

But... I do remember Mordor being a geographical location in Middle Earth, not a being or person that Hobbits "defeated," as McCain put it. I knew this the moment that I heard McCain utter his strange attack on the Tea Party. Hobbits never defeated Mordor...

I know that it doesn't matter much, geography of this and all, but if you are going to invoke "Hobbits" and "Mordor" (why McCain said all that is just plain weird) then he should have some things straight, right?

That speech by McCain still has me scratching my head. Was it just me, or was McCain just slightly quivering (his upper body that is) when he gave that speech?

McCain is an idiot. He is probably free-basing his wife's meth again.

And yes, you are correct. Mordor was a place not a person or a thing in Tolkien's stories.

McCain is a sad old fool.

In the stories the forces of Suron were sometimes refered to geographically as the forces ‘of Mordor’. Just as we might say that in WW2 we defeated ‘Germany’ instead of just Hitler or Nazism.

McCain has dementia. Mordor is located in the middle east. Isengard is in Washington DC

You can defeat “forces,” not a geographical location.

McCain didn’t put it like you put it.

He thought that he was going to be cute and clever but he botched it, because he didn’t know what he was talking about. And it appeared that he was just slightly quivering when he gave his strange speech, too.

Once again he tries to bail out Obama and the establishment Democrats, just like he bailed them out on Libya. Just like he has bailed out Establishment Repubs and Dems on... and... and...

The list is long. This is enough.

A hobbit destroyed Mordor’s source of power and it collapsed.

We hobbits need to destroy Washington’s source of power - our money.

This whole analogy is rich and worth our time to consider.

Was the author implying that Washington is like Mordor? Or only that the Teaparty wrongly think Washington is like Mordor?

Was the author implying that the average american taxpayer is like a hobbit (traditional, loyal, simple, happy, honest, agrarian, brave, charitable...) or only that we fancy ourselves as such?

Interesting...

I’m sure he neither read the books nor saw any of the movies. Somebody told him it would be cool to say. It wasn’t. Useful idiot.

Hey McStain! Two scruffy Hobbits threw the ring of power into the crack of doom and thereby defeated one of the biggest, baddest and ugliest tyrants of middle earth.

Now sit down and shut up you senile old freak!

“Two scruffy Hobbits threw the ring of power into the crack of doom and thereby defeated one of the biggest, baddest and ugliest tyrants of middle earth.”

Actually, an ex-hobbit fell into the cracks of doom. He wasn’t pushed, he fell. Therefore, it was because of a hobbit (albeit a hobbit twisted and corruption beyond recognition as such) that the Ring was destroyed.

Hold your ground! Hold your ground!

Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me!

A day may come when the courage of men fails. When we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship. But it is not this day. An hour of wolves, and shattered shields when the age of men comes crashing down!

But it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear... on this good earth... I bid you stand! Men of the West!

{boy oh boy... does that fit well or what?}

I always thought that Sauron of Mordor got a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas and shot his eye out.

Not to defend the idiot McLame, but you’re wrong.

When Gollum bites off Frodo’s finger at the Crack of Doom and falls in holding the Ring, Mordor’s Barad-dur falls, and all the other works of Sauron fall.

The hobbits DID defeat Mordor, utterly. There are a lot of pages in “The Return of the King” devoted to it. Had Sam and Frodo not had the guts to go into Mordor carrying the Ring, the West would have fallen instead.

Of course, the fact that I’ve read the trilogy at least 20 times might have something to do with my ability to remember the story.

“Nay cousin, they are not boys. Those are Periain, out of the far country of the Halflings, where they are Princes of great fame it is said. I should know, for I had one to tend in the Houses. They are small, but they are valiant. Why, cousin, one of them went with only his esquire into the Black Country and fought with the Dark Lord all by himself, and set fire to his tower, if you can believe it. At least that is the tale in the City. That will be the one that walks with our Elfstone. They are dear friends I hear.” Ioreth
