(CNN) -- The Muscular Dystrophy Association announced Wednesday that comedian Jerry Lewis is no longer serving as the organization's national chairman.
Lewis, 85, and MDA had announced in May that he was retiring as host of the MDA Labor Day Telethon in September. But he said then in a statement that he was planning to continue to serve as the organization's national chairman.
"As a labor of love, I've hosted the annual telethon since 1966," Lewis said in the news release issued in May by the association. "And I'll be making my final appearance on the show this year, by performing my signature song, 'You'll Never Walk Alone.'"
Jim Brown, vice president of public relations for the MDA, told CNN in a telephone interview that Lewis will not be replaced in his role as national chairman.
He also said that Lewis will not host this year's telethon, which is scheduled for September 4. Instead, it will be hosted by Nigel Lythgoe, Nancy O'Dell, Allison Sweeney and Jan Carl, Brown said.

God bless you jerry lewis.. you done good...
Neil Cavuto would be a good choice to at least appear...
I gave it up cold turkey when Marlena was possessed by the devil. LOL
HAHA yeah that brings back memories. The whole possession storyline was lame, but heck, its Days we are talking about here..I mean really, how many times has Stefano died..20, 30 LOL
With Nancy O'Dell, mine too!
LOL...No sh*t, Sherlock!
I’m guessing sooner than later.
Oops.
What’s with all the Limeys they’re foisting upon us these days?
Maybe your young and don’t know anything about Lewis’s career back in the 50’s and 60’s, but WTF difference does it make why he started to do it

Oh, I know about Lewis’ career, but what do my children have to do with it?
I disagree with many of his political beliefs. I judge the man by his actions. What he has done for charity will define this man. His actions were and are good.
I've never heard of any of them, either.
I guess I've been under a 'Raq. ;-)
>>> originally Jerry Lewis went for this charity because he was accused of mocking the handicapped with his characters
Political correctness had not yet hit circa 1951. Nobody punished an entertainer for mocking the handicapped, speech defects, retardation, etc. You can view the original Martin and Lewis television show from this era and see even then Lewis was pushing the MD charity.
And then came the telethon.

Maybe he actually met JL!
I apologized for my harsh remark a few posts later. I make mistakes sometimes.
While certainly it may have been time for Jerry to step back, his shoddy treatment and the rather dismissive statement released yesterday don’t do justice to a man who had worked tirelessly for this cause for SIXTY YEARS. Let the MDA know what you think.

France just lowered their flag to half mast.
I took the drug for about 25 years, and had a lot of problems including osteoporosis, though it did keep me alive.
He looks a lot better since he came off the drug, and has lost most of the weight he gained.
