Jackie Onassis believed that Lyndon B Johnson and a cabal of Texas tycoons were involved in the assassination of her husband John F Kennedy, ‘explosive’ recordings are set to reveal.
The secret tapes will show that the former first lady felt that her husband’s successor was at the heart of the plot to murder him.
She became convinced that the then vice president, along with businessmen in the South, had orchestrated the Dallas shooting, with gunman Lee Harvey Oswald – long claimed to have been a lone assassin – merely part of a much larger conspiracy.
Texas-born Mr Johnson, who served as the state’s governor and senator, completed Mr Kennedy’s term and went on to be elected president in his own right.
The tapes were recorded with leading historian Arthur Schlesinger Jnr within months of the assassination on November 22, 1963, and had been sealed in a vault at the Kennedy Library in Boston.

According to the article, permission for ABC to release the tapes was a successful bribe to stop the network from running the Kennedy miniseries. What a sad sick twisted family.

It is all very interesting and has been theorized forever but I’m wondering why Caroline agreed to release these tapes now.
The notion that it was to block a benign mini-series that was released anyway - even if she thought this would come out — would easily be dismissed with an.... I will not dignify this with a comment - comment. But to let these out now, near an election year, when 33 years remained on keeping them private, why?

Recall, Mob interests in Cuba were lost when someone called off air support for the Bay of Pigs invasion. Millions in nightclub action were lost to the Communists' regime as well as smuggling opportunities.
There were plenty of reasons for people to keep their mouths shut, and an accident here, a suicide there, an unfortunate plane crash, all add up over time. People 'in the know' might even have died of old age.

The marriage was likely one 'to the right sort of people' and I'd just about bet it was arranged (Rose's tendrils anyone?), as much for appearances sake as anything.

I don’t buy the “deal” she made. It just doesn’t add up. The mini-series was shown anyway and if it had had some “shocking” revelation, she could have turned her back on the questions and no one would have blinked an eye.

What reason does anyone have to believe the Kennedys will release every word of every tape and transcript? They give us what is useful to themselves as a political family. In this case, probably just enough to put in doubt the worst of what's in the documentary.
