Recall push in Lawrence is in jeopardy (corrupt mayor)
Boston Globe ^ | 8/12/11 | Brian Ballou

Leaders of an effort to oust controversial Lawrence [MA] Mayor William Lantigua are worried that they may not have collected enough signatures for their recall election petition to be approved. The anti-Lantigua forces collected 5,600 signatures, turning the last ones just two minutes before the Aug. 8 deadline, apparently exceeding the minimum of 5,232.

But city officials have told the group and the local media that hundreds of the signatures have not met certification criteria and been rejected. The city’s Board of Registrars will make an official statement at 5 p.m. today.

“During our effort to collect the signatures, many of the volunteers enlisted friends and family, and got people walking down streets to sign,’’ said Wayne Hayes, a resident of Lawrence for 11 years who has led the effort with about a dozen other activists. “We lost some accuracy in the process.’’

Hayes said he believes many of the signatures have been rejected because of outdated addresses. (snip)

“We haven’t gotten a clear message from the elections office on what we can do next, but we are still committed on getting this mayor out of office. We feel this is the right way to help the city and we won’t be daunted. Lantigua, he’s brought with him a Dominican-style dictatorship form of government, setting it up as regular shop in Lawrence. He’s incompetent,” Hayes said.

Howie Carr list ping. Note the first comment:
Why is there more identity validation surrounding the process to recall a potentially corrupt politician than there is to elect one in the first place??

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Lantigua

>>Lantigua caused controversy when fellow lawmakers on Beacon Hill questioned his ability to hold the position of mayor and State Representative simultaneously in the midst of a citywide financial crisis..in April 2011 Lantigua was the subject of a federal investigation into possible corruption and other potential wrongdoing. This investigation was the latest in a series of bizarre events that have led to a recall petition to oust Lantigua from office after 15 tumultuous months...On May 11, 2011 Lantigua was criticized for receiving fuel assistance (along with his girlfriend, with whom he is currently living) totaling possibly $1,165, despite a combined household income of $145,000. Lantigua later returned the money, but still faces the fallout from the ongoing appearance of impropriety.

This comes as no surprise, weak willie put out notifications in spanish saying not to sign the petition, it was obvious to anyone following this story that he would stop at nothing to discredit the signatures - willie is just as corrupt as the rest of the politicans in this state.

", he’s brought with him a Dominican-style dictatorship form of government,"

Lovely. Perhaps we can just give the city away to the DR and let it be their problem. ;d
