Sexual relations between ancient humans and their evolutionary cousins are critical for our modern immune systems, researchers report in Science journal.
Mating with Neanderthals and another ancient group called Denisovans introduced genes that help us cope with viruses to this day, they conclude.
Previous research had indicated that prehistoric interbreeding led to up to 4% of the modern human genome.
The new work identifies stretches of DNA derived from our distant relatives.
In the human immune system, the HLA (human leucocyte antigen) family of genes plays an important role in defending against foreign invaders such as viruses.
The authors say that the origins of some HLA class 1 genes are proof that our ancient relatives interbred with Neanderthals and Denisovans for a period.

I think I updated my immune system when I was in the Navy.
Somehow, I am thinking that, if Neantherdals really lookedlike how we think they looked like, considering how physically strong they were, there probably wasn’t much choice in the matter on the part of modern man.
Just guessing us wanting to have sex with them probably wasn’t on our bucket list.
I really wonder what legends, tales, symbolism, remnant memories etc. came from the brief time (comparatively speaking) when our homo sapiens sapiens ancestors came in contact with the Neanderthals.
It has always intrigued me.
What must they have looked like to our ancestors? did they appear uncommonly stupid, or cunning, or like giants or what?
guess I’ll never know.
The average Neatherdal was about 5’5, so they weren’t giants by no means, but their bone structure and density shows that the were incredibly strong.
I’ve read estimates that they were upwards of 30 percent stronger than our decathletes, which puts them being able to bench 350 lbs to 450 lbs.
But the reason why we could outcompete the brutes was that our caloric needs were much less, which allowed us to gather resources more quickly, have more kids, etc.
“Man, I wish I’d thought of that line back when I was playing.”
This sounds like some PC BS to me. If this is true, then why aren’t Black Africans being wiped out by viruses?
This is just another bit of propaganda calculated to convince us that White countries and only White countries being invaded by the third world is a good thing for humanity.
I think that the evidence that only the very early modern humans mated with them says something about this. Once there were lots of other modern humans to mate with the genetic exchange seems to of diminished then stopped. I think that would point to them being unattractive perhaps even troll like, if even the long hunters were not shacking up with them. Lone males generally will have sex with about anything and anybody.
Hey, I’m all for a little “Neanderthal sex”.
I personally doubt the narrative that Neantherdals were of a different species. If they were, it’s unlikely that genetic material could be exchanged.
With proper clothes and presentation, they probably weren’t that inattractive for the time they lived in.
Don’t forget the Nephilim.
Didn't they play at Woodstock in 1969?
I don’t believe angels and man can mate. When I read that passage or the one in Jonah, talking about sons of God, I think he’s talking about believers. Sons of men are unbelievers and when believers and non-believers have kids, the kids don’t know what to believe.
Just like today when Christians marry non-Christians.
I just don’t get why we make a distinction between “modern” humans and Neanderthals. If two creatures can mate and have fertile offspring they are of the same species.
You obviously have never been in a redneck bar at closing time. An adolescent Neanderthal girl was probably acceptably cute to the Cro-Magnon crowd.
As far as their being stronger than us, it probably wouldn't matter if the Cro-Mags could toss a spear or shoot an arrow more accurately.
whereas the recent migrants from Africa wouldn't have had these genes,
Why not? Who says? They just drop a dubious fact into the mix without support or explanation.
“These factors include resistance to HIV replication within CD4 immune cells as well as a mutation, so far found only among Caucasians, in a receptor on immune cells that may make these cells tougher for the virus to infiltrate.”
Ever seen a beautiful woman with a butt ugly man?
It was a few years back in Louisville Kentucky. I met a family of Russian-Jewish immigrants. They had an attractive daughter in her early 20s but the entire family I swear to God had a lot of the physical attributes one thinks of as Neanderthal; the brow ridges, big noses, weak chins and stocky builds. I remember thinking at the time, 20 years ago, there must be an isolated village in Russia where Neanderthal survived.
Even with all these traits they were not unintelligent or unattractive. As a matter of fact I found the daughter very attractive.
“I think I updated my immune system when I was in the Navy.”
Nothing the Corpsman couldn’t take care of with one of those big “Silver Bullet” shots I hope.
Neanderthals are not a different species.
They are Homo Sapiens Neanderthalensis as compared to our Homo Sapiens Sapiens.
We are of the same species, different family, so there is no reason why they couldn’t interbreed.
I personally doubt they were really from a different family.
We were probably, maybe not quite, but as closely related as the different ethnicities are today.
Projectile weapons such as slings, atlatls, and bows probably made homo sap a superior fighter.
My understanding of genetics is that there is not just one genome,so to say “our ancestors” is introducing a universalism that is not warranted.
All the anti-white propaganda coming out of supposedly unbiased academia is sickening, and it`s been going on for decades.
I’m sure that helped.
But if they got a hold of you, you were screwed, in more ways than one. :)

So...you’re saying the Neanderthals were rich?
Possibly..! Lol They carried the biggest clubs around.

Thanks decimon. There were two other Neandertal articles online, not sure everyone would appreciate if I posted the accumulated backlog from last night's downtime though. ;')To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list. The Neandertal EnigmaFrayer's own reading of the record reveals a number of overlooked traits that clearly and specifically link the Neandertals to the Cro-Magnons. One such trait is the shape of the opening of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, a spot where dentists often give a pain-blocking injection. In many Neandertal, the upper portion of the opening is covered by a broad bony ridge, a curious feature also carried by a significant number of Cro-Magnons. But none of the alleged 'ancestors of us all' fossils from Africa have it, and it is extremely rare in modern people outside Europe." [pp 126-127]
It’s sorta funny. A few years ago, not very many in fact, we were being assured that DNA testing positively PROVED that modern man and Neanderthals never mated AND couldn’t interbreed.
One theory advanced, if I recall correctly, was that modern men woukd have found Neanderthals sexually unattractive.
Seeing that men have been known to mate with walruses, I found that idea a little thin, myself.
“The average Neatherdal was about 55, so they werent giants by no means, but their bone structure and density shows that the were incredibly strong.”
Hey! I’m not fat, I’m big-boned!
I can bench 350. In fact, I can bench 405 for a clean 3 or a messy 5.
It’s not extraordinary in any given Gold’s Gym.
Oh there is a difference.
In Gold’s gym, guys who can do that do it once. The Neantherdal had to do that all day long, because when they went hunting for mastadon or had to fight predators, those weren’t short battles.
Also, you are talking about an average, not 1 in a thousand. If we were talking about their 1 in a thousand, we’d be talking about our 1 in a million.
Oh, I agree they are larger than average, but a larger-than-average Homo Sapien Sapien would be a near equivalent.
Seriously, in my gym, I am one of 20 or 30 guys who do a 405 for reps -— just takes training and eating.
Now, north of that, it becomes a drug or freak genetic thing -— or that’s my excuse for stalling at barely above 405.
I have no reason to doubt you, but it’s still not likely a statistical average if every man went and did hardcore weight training that he would see 400 lb bench press.
The fact that you can do that keeps you going to the gym. When you can do something well, you want to keep doing it.
And, just to be clear, from the fossil record, sapiens are not thought to not be, even close to the physical strength of a Neanderthal. We were taller, our bones were not as dense, which is an indicator of physical strength.
In body-building terms, most Neanderthals were like a Franco Columbo or Ronnie Coleman and every Sapien was more like a Frank Zane.
However, Neanderthals had a much higher caloric need and because they needed to eat more, it meant more time gathering resources and less time reproducing. It is thought that this was the determining factor that eventually led to their demise and our success.
