Bar-goers upset about no-dog rules

NEW YORK, - The New York City Health Department has been cracking down on animals in bars, much to the dismay of pet and bar owners.

Between July 1, 2010, and June 30, 2011, the health department issued 469 citations for having live animals in bars and restaurants, The New York Times reported.

The crackdown means Miles, a 9-year-old boxer-pug mix can no longer go into the Ace Bar.

"He's a dog, but I swear he looks sad," Mike Israely, 33, the dog's owner. "Coming here was part of our evening walk."

City health codes have always found dogs near beer taps a violation, but many bars have disregarded the rule; NYC has a long history of dog-friendly establishments. In the 19th century, saloons often employed dogs as security.

Many residents deem quality of an establishment by whether or not they allow dogs. Allowing dogs is a sign of a "a proper neighborhood bar," Christine Sismondo, the author of "America Walks Into a Bar."

"It proves you're not one of those corporate B.Y.O.F. bars: bring your own friends."

But much to the relief of people who don't go to bars to get dog slobber on their clothes.

It should be up to the owner of the bar, plain and simple.

That’s one of the many benefits of living in Montana.

Dogs and beer. What's not to like?

Unless you are a nanny-stater trying to justify your phoney-baloney job.

If the bar is A/C’d, and the “correct” breeds are allowed, there’s no slobber. Dog hair? Yep, plenty.

Oh well that's OK then. Who doesn't like dog hair in their drinks and bar snacks?

He’d be good to have around in a bar fight.

Happened to my favorite bar, George Keeleys on 83rd/Amsterdam in 2009. They said it was because they also served food. Never heard of the ‘close to beer tap’ clause.

You wouldn’t want my Great Pyrennes in a bar. There would be fur blowing through it like tumbleweeds.

Some years ago, in the 50’s I think, the 101 airborne folks in Korea had a donkey for a mascot. They would take him to the bar and give him beer, after he got drunk he would station himself in the door of the bar. Anyone attempting to enter got kicked; anyone attempting to exit got bit. At least I am told, I was in the 82nd Airborne Division.

Spending the summer in Butte, Montana....My Great Dane frequents a local bar, “The Helsinki Yacht Club.”

Free goodies for any dog that shows up, and the Dane has appointed himself official guard dog.

One the warm evenings, when the front door is open, he ESCORTS ALL PATRONS to their cars when they leave.

Better yet, when cars pull in to the curb, he seeks out cars with female occupants.

Then he TAKES THE WOMAN BY THE WRIST, and escorts them into the bar!

Good Dog! lol
