FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Federal authorities have charged an Indiana man with child abuse after he allegedly forced his three young grandsons on brutal Grand Canyon hikes in August.
Authorities said Christopher A. Carlson, of Indianapolis, is accused of beating the boys, making them walk on ulcerated blisters, denying them food and water and forcing them to run up the trail under the intense sun.
A complaint filed by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Flagstaff said rangers and passersby noted the alleged abuse by Carlson against the boys, ages 12, 9 and 8.
The Arizona Daily Sun said one of the hikes was 19 miles last weekend when temperatures reached 108 degrees at Phantom Ranch along the Colorado River.

If he is the paternal grandparent - it’s possible he abused his own son - and I hope the father of these boys takes appropriate action.

His grandsons — ages 12, 9 and 8 had blisters on their feet, cracked lips and could barely stand — but if they stopped, he would physically harm them, reports allege.

The details are very sketchy and it doesn't ring true.

That grandpa must be one great hiker to outhike these boys. I hike a lot and my seven-year-old grandson consistently leaves me in the dust.

If they boys tried to stop, Carlson would allegedly whip their shirtless backs with a wet t-shirt.
And he would hit, push, kick and even choke his three grandsons.
When one boy collapsed out of exhaustion — Carlson pushed him to the ground and smashed his face into a rock.
He reportedly choked and lifted his youngest grandson by the throat, the report alleges.
Carlson harshly squeezed their genitals as a form of punishment, and would not allow them to use the restroom for more than a few seconds. After hiking, the boys were not allowed to sleep.
And you still think physical abuse and torture are survival tools for 12, 9 and 8 year-old children?
Post traumatic stress disorder will probably follow them for the rest of their lives....and they will likely abuse others.
That said, this sounds like an average day at Parris Island...
