Wildlife biologists are proposing to shoot hundreds or even thousands of Pacific Northwest barred owls as a way to protect the endangered Northern spotted owl. Barred owls are larger, more aggressive and have been taking over spotted owl territory for the past 20 years. The proposal to shoot barred owls is part of a federal spotted owl recovery plan that will be released soon.
Whether to intervene in what some see as a natural competition between species is a matter of hot debate among biologists, conservationists and the timber industry, which argues that we've set aside huge chunks of habitat for a bird that now can't be saved.
Human action has consequences. Here's my barred owl story from February and a couple other odd and cautionary tales.
“barred owls” ???
barn owls ???
We are total a******.
This is affirmative action for the spotted owls - shoot the others. When can we expect this sort of treatment from the ACORN types? Also, why is it that those most sold on Darwinian survival of the fittest, take the most pains to ensure that it won’t be given an opportunity to function?
barred owls ???
jail birds ???
Logging in Oregon was pretty much shut down because of the SPOTTED OWL over the past 20+ years....now they’ve “discovered” it was the BARRED OWL which was killing the Spotted Owl....and are going to kill THEM....but, they won’t admit they killed logging industry, nor open it back up without a fight....a HUgE FIGHT....Oregon Ping
They believe in it but they want to keep it from happening. So they don’t want you to be armed (saving criminals) and they want to require seatbelts and helmets (saving reckless drivers) and ban cigarettes (saving would-be smokers). They also support a vast welfare state (saving many leeches). For starters.
The other resident is Margret, she is the boss, give me a wide birth but is Finbars mate, she arrived two years ago.
Finbar is in charge of crows, Margret covers all other editable trespassers.
I read here on FR at least a couple of years ago, which I did not keep, that barred owls are from the East coast, but over the years have been making their way to the West coast. There they have found the love of their life...the spotted owl. They have taken up housekeeping together and produce little chicks.
These environmentalists are a bunch of mean whackos all because of natural breeding habits.
Thank you for that wonderful, wonderful story.
It made me smile. It also made me feel happy.
Oh boy, Rush really needs to do one of his Animal Rights Updates on this!

I guess the only way to protect the barred owl is open season on the spotted owl.
SSS!
Barred Owls (Strix varia) are plentiful here in North Louisiana. Their call is quite distinctive: “Who, who who cooks for you, who cooks for you all.”
