Human intervention; killing barred owls to help spotted owls
Oregon Live ^ | March 01, 2011

Posted on 09/05/2011 4:58:10 PM PDT by SJackson

Wildlife biologists are proposing to shoot hundreds or even thousands of Pacific Northwest barred owls as a way to protect the endangered Northern spotted owl. Barred owls are larger, more aggressive and have been taking over spotted owl territory for the past 20 years. The proposal to shoot barred owls is part of a federal spotted owl recovery plan that will be released soon.

Whether to intervene in what some see as a natural competition between species is a matter of hot debate among biologists, conservationists and the timber industry, which argues that we've set aside huge chunks of habitat for a bird that now can't be saved.

Human action has consequences. Here's my barred owl story from February and a couple other odd and cautionary tales.

This is affirmative action for the spotted owls - shoot the others. When can we expect this sort of treatment from the ACORN types? Also, why is it that those most sold on Darwinian survival of the fittest, take the most pains to ensure that it won’t be given an opportunity to function?

Logging in Oregon was pretty much shut down because of the SPOTTED OWL over the past 20+ years....now they’ve “discovered” it was the BARRED OWL which was killing the Spotted Owl....and are going to kill THEM....but, they won’t admit they killed logging industry, nor open it back up without a fight....a HUgE FIGHT....Oregon Ping

They believe in it but they want to keep it from happening. So they don’t want you to be armed (saving criminals) and they want to require seatbelts and helmets (saving reckless drivers) and ban cigarettes (saving would-be smokers). They also support a vast welfare state (saving many leeches). For starters.

I live in North Jersey and have two owls that reside in a “barn” on my property. One I found on the driveway about 6 years ago as a chick, feed and nursed him back into shape and am told he patterned me, I am an owl to him, Finbar is a good friend and keeps the crows in line, will come to see me if I am out after dusk, scares the hell out of the dogs.

The other resident is Margret, she is the boss, give me a wide birth but is Finbars mate, she arrived two years ago.

Finbar is in charge of crows, Margret covers all other editable trespassers.

I read here on FR at least a couple of years ago, which I did not keep, that barred owls are from the East coast, but over the years have been making their way to the West coast. There they have found the love of their life...the spotted owl. They have taken up housekeeping together and produce little chicks.

These environmentalists are a bunch of mean whackos…all because of natural breeding habits.

I guess the only way to protect the barred owl is open season on the spotted owl.

Barred Owls (Strix varia) are plentiful here in North Louisiana. Their call is quite distinctive: “Who, who who cooks for you, who cooks for you all.”

It's more than patterning. A recent Science News piece revealed many birds can learn to recognize individuals and pass on the information to other birds (of the same species).

I like to befriend mocking birds and crows. Get them to talk.
