John Wayne's personal items are up for auction
LA Times ^ | September 7, 2011 | Susan King

Ethan Wayne, the youngest son of Hollywood legend John Wayne, hates to have anything in his pockets because as a young boy he couldn't go out of the house with his dad without a stack of business cards that read, "Good Luck, John Wayne" on one side and the Duke's name typed on the other side stuffed in his pockets.

"He would always take care of the fans no matter how busy he got," said Wayne, 49, who is named after his father's character in John Ford's influential 1956 western "The Searchers."

"If he couldn't sign [an autograph] or talk to them, they at least got a card," said Wayne. "I would say to him, 'Dad, why do we have to talk to this guy?' He'd say, 'Son, because these are the people who allow me to do what I do.' Because they watched his films he was allowed to do what he did and live a certain lifestyle and take care of his family way until his late 60s. He was always astonished [by his success]."

Since 2003, Ethan Wayne has headed John Wayne Enterprises in Newport Beach, which is owned by the Duke's children and grandchildren and whose primary mission is to preserve and protect the name, likeness and image of the larger-than-life movie star. He also has such a large collection of his father's movie memorabilia that he has opened his archives for auction.

"We get phone calls here, not daily anymore, but certainly weekly from fans saying, 'How can I get one of your dad's vests from this film or these films?'" said Wayne, sitting in a conference room at his office. "People have been calling for 32 years. His films affected people and they have a personal relationship with the guy and they want that...

Yeah, too bad that you worship a false idol.

Good grief.

Elvis Presley was a great actor and a great man.

(As was Frankie Avalon, whispers in my ear my granma, but I’m too young to remember that.)

Not much of an exaggeration, sir. It seems to me that John Wayne fans practically worship the jerk.

Elvis was a great singer but he was far from a great actor, and I remember. :-)

I’m not saying he wasn’t an entertainer. I’m saying that if he took off his shirt and turned around one might well see a large yellow stripe. You see, I just think the man was the epitome of hypocrisy: he played tough, brave men but it was a lie. Not good enough for me.

As a young man, he applied for admission to Annapolis. When the U.S. enetered the war, he was 34 with 4 children.

Where do you get "the man was the epitome of hypocrisy: he played tough, brave men but it was a lie?"

When did he ever lie or mis-represent his military service, a la Gore or Kerry?

You do realize the difference between movies and reality, or do I assume too much?

Congress awarded his family the Congressional Medal of Honor, and Peanuts Carter awarded the lifelong Republican the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

He still could have served. He chose not to. You can look it up.

And as for that perception of the difference between movies and reality, I can tell the difference. I'm not too sure about the John Wayne fans.

Army cool.My uncle retired Army twenty years.Intellegence.

He traveled the world over.He also told me many times how much of an asset Duke was to this great country.

I appreciate your service, even as you admit there were no bullits flying.
Didn’t Duke have a hit contract on him from the Commies?

Must have been doing some good for this country to warrent that much attention from our foe.

Yeah, if you google it there are some that say his family was awarded the Medal of Honor but they’ve got to be mistakes from people that didn’t know the difference.

I have gotten flames for this before, but here I go:

We need to keep the “greatest generation” in context. While there were lines at the Recruiters the day after Pearl Harbor, most soldiers entered service through the draft. Across my family there were nIne men of age during WWII. All served. One enlisted. The rest were drafted. They served honorably. But in conversations with them over the years, none of them was thrilled about going. And given a chance NOT to have to, they would have rather stayed home. They are heroes for what they DID do. But do not assume that because someone served it was all patriotic and hung ho.

There is some fascinating stuff in there. I could spend several evenings going through it. Also some things that seem to be missing. Maybe they are being held back by the family. Letters from Bob Hope and Ronald Reagan for example (I did see 2 invitations from RR). Where are all of his guns? Were they donated to the NRA museum or already sold off? There is a receipt in there for a .22 and an AR-15 with 3 magazines. I wish I had money to bid on some of those items. I would love to have that saddle.

To return to these two items:

“Where do you get “the man was the epitome of hypocrisy: he played tough, brave men but it was a lie?””

I’m merely pointing out that the man presented his persona as a man’s man and I doubt that he ever took any pains to differentiate himself from that perception. I would bet that his fans probably had a hard time separating Wayne the actor from Wayne the man.

I would add that he seemed to enjoy playing the rough and ready cowboy, soldier, Marine, or airman, any tough guy role (probably because that was the extent of his acting talent). After all, he selected the roles he played in the movies.

“When did he ever lie or mis-represent his military service, a la Gore or Kerry?”

I don’t recall even bringing up this topic.

He was 33 when WW2 began. In all my years in the Marine Corps, I only once met a man over 33 join the Marines and he was barely 34.

Just about everybody I know did not sign up for service after 9-11. They are less than real men according to your silly standard.
