FOSTER -- But some parents in Boone County are outraged after finding out there have been three real snakes found loose in Brookview Elementary in just two weeks time.

Boone County Schools Assistant Superintendent Jeff Huffman says the snakes appear to be garden snakes, also known as garter snakes.

Grandmother Nancy Dickens says the whole situation is a little shocking.

"I would go find someone to help me get it out of there," Dickens said. "I would try to keep the kids away from it."

Huffman says an exterminator has been called to the school on two different occasions this school year.

He adds that he does not believe students are in danger.

This article sounds like it was written by a freakin high school student.

...REAL snakes...????? As opposed to the rubber kind you find at novelty stores??

And then it turns out they’re GARTER snakes???

Must be a super slow news day wherever this happened. I’m not going to waste my time tracking down the url and poring over the page to find something more than “Foster in Boone County”.

to see a snake at school.

"I got garter snakes up the wazoo around here."

In Chicago, the "garter snakes" all hang out at "The Blue Dahlia."

Last week my grandson caught an Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake. He then skinned and cooked it ... it was tough.

Garter snakes? My HS Biology teacher had one that was a class PET. He’d let anyone who felt like handling it keep it out during class...the little guy frequently snoozed thru a class period wrapped around someone’s wrist, with his head on the back of their hand. Very cute and friendly little dude.

“wussification-of-America”

Yeah, what has happened? Some years back, my Mom discovered a copperhead trying to get inside a hole in the back steps of the house. Sent me to get my Dad to kill the snake. Dad went in the front door and was in the house for a while. By the time he came out with the shotgun, Mom had gotten a garden hoe, pulled the snake out of the steps, cut its head off and cut the body into several pieces.

Of course, both of my parents were raised on farms.

Hubby and I were hiking along the Carquinez Strait in Benicia (northern California) when we came upon a tiny snake in the path. I picked it up to move it out of any danger, and it bit my finger.

Its tiny teeth didn’t even make it through the first layer of skin, and I laughed and placed it in the grass by the side of the trail.

I admired the brave little thing for “scaring off” a predator about a bazillion times its size.

Snakes are really cool, especially the non-venomous varieties, and I don’t get why people are so upset about harmless garden snakes.

You’re right about the wussificaton of America and Americans.

Years ago I read an article about some little kid who went off fishing by himself. When he got home, he complained that the worms he was using were trying to bite him when he baited the hook. Turns out they were newly hatched copperheads...........LOL!

My Mom found a copperhead in the basement of our cabin, many years ago. My aunt poured boiling water on it, while my Mom beat it to death with a boat paddle. LOL - I wish there had been a way to videotape that!

We caught one of those in our yard a few months back. I never knew there were such itty bitty snakes around here, and at first, I thought it was a worm. Looked it up on the internet just to make sure it wasn’t poisonous, and it said that this species has a very mild venom, for the bugs it eats. We let it go after keeping it in a jar for a few hours. Ours had some bluish colors on its belly.

I don't like snakes. Lived too long around the kind that were "two-steps" (they bit, you took two steps and died) but even I could have dealt with this.

Yep. Wusses.

Atavistic fear? I’ve never had it for spiders, snakes, frogs, etc. I do have an aversion to flies, especially after having been bitten by deer flies.

Yes, I don’t get the fear of small, harmless creatures either.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

It's one of those nights, I guess. What is this? Five or six arth threads pinged out so far?
