Vanity: Opting out of Vaccinations: Texas vs Alaska (Current as of 2009: Easier in Texas)
National Vaccine Information Center ^ | Current as of 2009

Posted on 09/12/2011 10:50:27 PM PDT by icwhatudo

In Texas:

"An affidavit signed by the applicant or, if a minor, by the applicant's parent or guardian stating that the applicant declines immunization for reasons of conscience, including a religious belief. A form must be obtained at the Health Department."

In Alaska:

"Statement by M.D., D.O., P.A, or advanced nurse practitioner stating that immunizations would be injurious to the health of the child or members of the child's family or household

OR

"Affidavit affirming immunization conflicts with "tenets and practices of the church or religious denomination of which the applicant is a member"

In Alaska, unless you are "a member" of a particular church or denomination, your only hope is to get a medical professional to certify the vaccination will harm you. In Texas, you just fill out a form saying it goes against your "conscience".

Not to mention that in 2003, four years before Gardasil was approved by the FDA, Rick Perry signed a piece of legislation that lets Texas parents OPT OUT of ANY immunizations they deem dangerous to their children, OR opt in, if they don’t.

Bachmann got written off the short list tonight because of her political hackery. Palin better do her research before she fully digs in on the Gardasil issue.

A distinction without a difference.

A religion is whatever I say it is. Any provision to the contrary is an establishment of religion and unconstitutional. So, if Gardasil is against my conscience, I don't need the say-so of no stinkin' medical professional.

“for reasons of conscience, including a religious belief”

vs

“conflicts with tenets and practices of the church or religious denomination of which the applicant is a member”

Seems pretty different to me. Not only do you have to be a “member” for that to work, it has to go against the “tenets and practices” of that particular church or denomination...otherwise find an Alaskan doc that says it will hurt you.

“A distinction without a difference”

Not sure what you mean here. There is a big difference between the two. In TX you don’t need a Dr. to sign off, in AK you do.

Bachman was desparate and Palin is jealous. I don’t the Gardisil issue will hurt Perry too much. They both look petty.

The immigraton issue could cost Perry some support, however. But don’t kmow who it will help.

Bachmann and Santorum sounded shrill and uninformed tonight when attacking Governor Perry about the HPV vaccine. He explained the situation, and since that was several years ago, this should have been a non-issue.

Uh, is this relative to Perry's executive order to mandate the inoculation of female children for STD?

Or, it this for the standard mandated school inoculations throughout the US for children?

Sarah Palin made it quite clear in some of her 24,000 emails poured over by the LSM, that she was very critical of what Perry was doing at the time. Also she made it known to the Alaska legislature than any such bill would be vetoed by her.

Now if you cannot see the difference, that is your problem, not mine.

Not only do you have to be a “member” for that to work, it has to go against the “tenets and practices” of that particular church or denomination

But I can be a church or denomination of one, complete with whatever tenets and practices I receive via divine revelation (i.e., dream up). Or, if I can't, then the state is arrogating the right to establish a religion, which is illegal under the Constitution.

On some other thread, someone mentioned that the reason the Texas law was opt-out was that opt-in would have disqualified the opt-inners from insurance coverage. Whereas, of course, those who didn't want it could opt-out for free. They just needed to read their mail. So, arguably, Perry's only victims in the Gardasil thing were the insurance companies.

Not sure what you mean here. There is a big difference between the two. In TX you don’t need a Dr. to sign off, in AK you do.

Both states had a religious conscience opt-out, which can be stretched as far as you want with a straight face.

“Bachmann got written off the short list tonight because of her political hackery. Palin better do her research before she fully digs in on the Gardasil issue.”

Palin isn’t running or debating. Bachmann is the one who went with the whole crony accusation. It sounds like something Ed Rollins would tell her to bring up in order to appear tough. Typical dirty tricks style negative campaigning.

So did Palin accept a $5,000 campaign donation or did her former CoS work for the drug companies when these requirements were passed? If not I fail to see your point. Or maybe you wanted to point out how Palin tried to ignore the state elected lawmakers and mandate a vaccine for a STD by EO?
