In order to make Intel's IDF 2011 parade a bit more sour, AMD announced that its yet to be released FX-8150 CPU was already overclocked to 8.429GHz, which earned the company the Guinness World Record for the highest achieved frequency.
AMD's own Sami Maekinen as well as Brian Mclachlan, Pete Hardman and Aaron Schradin had some fun with AMD's eight-core FX-8150 CPU. Just for reference, previous best AMD record was set at 7378.25MHz with the Phenom II 955 Black Edition. Of course, if you take a look at the CPU-Z screenshots, you will notice that the score was achieved with only two out of eight cores, but it is still an impressive result.
The CPU was ticking at 8429.38MHz (271.92x31) at 2.016V and overclocking was done on Asus' Crosshair V Formula motherboard with 2GB of Corsair RAM. Of course, we are talking about high-level overclocking with liquid helium, which isn't quite your ordinary overclocking material.
The record was scored back on August 31st but AMD managed to keep it a secret and "decided" to break the news today. Of course, the overclocking was done on an engineering sample and we are yet to see those CPUs in stores. October is the date we keep hearing, at least for now.

In related news, Microsoft has announced their follow-on operating system Windows 8 that will require a minimum 10 GHz processor in order to keep boot times under 5 minutes...
I am able to get 3.4Ghz stable out of my Intel Q6600 2.4Ghz
I needed an aftermarket cooler of course.
Some guys re able to get 3.6+ out of a Q6600.
But whatever, 3.4 made for a big cost savings when i built this PC a few years back.
Now if only i had liquid nitrogen....

Of course, clock speed is only part of what makes a cpu fast. The number of cores it has, how many pipelines, branch prediction capability, on-die cache etc. are equally important factors.

The only reason I OC my CPU is because I can’t get all 6 cores functioning without it (3% OC)..
I really wish AMD took over nVidia instead of ATI.. ATI has been nothing but trouble. I am pushing 2 nVidia cards.. wish I could find a better cooling system for the vid cards.. impossible here though :/

I Believe it was AMD that Bought ATI.
Nvidia is still their own company if i remember.
Fine by me though.

I’ve got an AMD Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition, and tried to get the other two cores working, but it bluescreens right off, even with all four cores underclocked.
You got the extra cores working by overclocking?
So I guess I will have to purchase Dewars of liquid nitrogen along with my next PC purchase....heheh..
Yes, it was the only way (that I've found so far) that I could activate the 'Turbo'.. MoBo: ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 The manual is in Japanese (of course).. I guess I could look up the online version ;) What I had to do was boot into BIOS and allow it to use the AUTO OC.. I then saved the profile for future resets.
I was actually able to tweak it once (with factory RAM settings and speed.. but I had a power outage that screwed it up.. I haven't been able to do that again. (I prefer normal speed over OCing.. less problems and longer use)

Intel’s had nVidia in its crosshairs for a couple of years, and not in a good, takeover way. Intel’s been pushing its own, integrated graphics processing, which is one reason; the other reason is nVidia’s flirting with the CPU market. The GPU makers have that very-multi-core expertise that should be helpful in CPU design particularly for mobile computing.
The AMD takeover of ATI was done to compete with / one-up Intel vis-a-vis integrated graphics. And nVidia had problems with melting solder on some of its designs in the past few years. It’s probably just a matter of a year or few before nVidia has to find a buyer.
