OKLAHOMA CITY The nation's second-largest Indian tribe said on Tuesday that it would not be dictated to by the U.S. government over its move to banish 2,800 African Americans from its citizenship rolls.
"The Cherokee Nation will not be governed by the BIA," Joe Crittenden, the tribe's acting principal chief, said in a statement responding to the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Crittenden, who leads the tribe until a new principal chief is elected, went on to complain about unnamed congressmen meddling in the tribe's self-governance.
The reaction follows a letter the tribe received on Monday from BIA Assistant Secretary Larry Echo Hawk, who warned that the results of the September 24 Cherokee election for principal chief will not be recognized by the U.S. government if the ousted members, known to some as "Cherokee Freedmen," are not allowed to vote.

Take much federal wampum to fix this.
Perhaps the Great Black father in Washington can hold a peace pipe summit in DC so that the BIA can better dictate to the tribes how to behave?
As a 1/8th member of the Cherokee nation I support this!
Hmmmm. I wonder if Chief Thunder Thud coud help?
‘member now....no fire-water.......
announce a plan to build many nuclear reactor on Native American lands:
1. Strikes a heavy blow
2. Makes a bunch of dough
I’m 1/16.... too bad not 1/8 like you...you could be a member.
I guess the keepers of the reservation are fearful of the freeloaders...turning it into a plantation....
“The Cherokee Nation will not be governed by the BIA,” Joe Crittenden...
Joe is missing a ‘T’.
He’s gone from being a Native American to a Naive American.
What’s funny is that on the Federal census many people had rather be known as a black than Indian.
A lot of people don’t understand this, because the MSM muddies it just like they do so many other stories.
From what I understand, if you are descended from a Cherokee bloodline, black, white, or inbetween, you are a Cherokee. If you are a line that was an escaped slave that was harbored or owned by a Cherokee, you are not a member.
You have to have a certain percentage of blood to be a Cherokee. That’s all this is about. You can’t just say, hey I lived with you, therefore I am a voting member of the tribe.
I hope I am reading this correctly but that is what I am getting. The MSM is trying to make it seem that if you are Cherokee and also black, you are getting thrown out.
Heap Big Wampum indeed
I’m 1/64th and my ancestor lived in Kentucky.
>Joe is missing a T.
I smell reparations AGAIN!!
Don’t get into a legal situation on a Rez and expect recourse in Tribal Court.
After more than a century and a half of association with the tribe, wouldn't there have been some intermarriage between the blacks and the Cherokee to put the current "black Cherokees" over the 1/8 threshold or was strict marriage segregation the custom?
I don't have a dog in this fight. Just asking.
Cherokee Nation it its bid to preserve their cultural and racial heritage.
All people have that right.
EVEN WHITE PEOPLE!
Indians found out...that FREEDMAN soon became FREELOADERS hell bent on undermining the cuture to remain a parasite...
Why do we STILL have a Bureau of Indian Affairs?
How many billions a year are we wasting on this less than worthless continuing boondoogle?
Have’m heap big problem kemosabi.
Great Chief Chicken Shiite will NOT be happy about this!
ACORN seems to be doing a pretty good job of making that argument work for illegal aliens in the United States.
I suspect that this has little to do with racism and everything to do with having to divide up Casino money among members of the tribe.
My great grandmother was full Cherokee.
Will 0bama send in federal troops to punish the Indians and force them to accept blacks into the tribe? Inquiring minds want to know.
Diversity’s racist tribes showing their true colors again.
That’s what I’ve heard...you’d have to really prove it, and then it’s up to their council.....don’t know ...haven’t heard much other than it’s not a slam-dunk...
Agree also..they have the right...However, I’m not so sure that the reason is preserving cultural and racial heritage rather than diluting the casino take and member payouts...
Ever seen Second Civil War?
Funny....I was just looking through some files I’d scattered about my basement workshop...one page was an old typed funeral eulogy for my great-great grandfather, William Lafayette Weems, died 1922 and born in Cherokee County here in Georgia in 1860.....his parents were the immigrants here in Georgia, I think (not sure - there a lot of ‘Weems’ that go back quite a ways)....I digress....my Cherokee roots are from my father’s side of the family from Clinton SC where his daddy was a sharecropper.....my grandmother (his wife) was 1/4 Cherokee...
The Black Caucus is all over this. I always like when two Dem constituencies are at loggerheads. Another headache for Chief Barack.
correct on all points.
The MSM are not telling all the facts here.
The Cherokee tribe have been for years trying to get a more stricter way of saying if you’re Cherokee.
I HATE THE MSM
I’d say that’s the deal.... You have 3.0005632% of Cherokee heritage going for ya you get 3.0005632% membership....regardless of what color.
My opinion only....:o)
This is really going to make the Blackfeet mad.
“The Cherokee Nation will not be governed by the BIA.”
“And we refuse to take any more white man money.” - well, damnit, somebody had to say it.
Wonders if Great Black Father will put them on “the Trail of Tears” again?
To become a member of the tribe one need only prove an ancestor was on one of the early rolls, i.e. The Dawes Rolls, used to give members their allotments. Blood quantum is not a factor. I am 1/64 and just recently joined. This is not unusual for people, like myself, who research their family history. A large number of the tribe do not get, nor want, the freebies. Any black whose ancestor intermarried & was on the rolls will remain in the tribe or can enroll if not already a member.
Hope that helps you........
So what? Either has merit. We did conquer this land and we are giving the conquered their "due". Just because we have been taught to think through the veil of political correctness, does not make them wrong.
Many blacks claim slavery, a common practice of the day, as their sole reason to collect welfare checks - and white guilt has kept the money flowing. They claim victim status because "we took them from their land and brought them here" I say, the Red Indian just lacks "White Guilt"
So now, the American Indian calls their bluff? I'm all LOL!
As far as the victim blacks? Send them back to whatever continent they are so proud of, and quit rolling over to their every whim.
The race-based “Congressional Black Caucus” is opposed to race-based membership in the Cherokee Nation.
You can’t make this shit up.
Indian and Black?
The double dip possibilities are endless.
That will be the day.
My great grandmother was Cherokee.....what percentage does that make me?
