Funny thing is my mom is from Jackson, OH and back in the day her father was one of the prominent people there. Both her parents were strict disciplinarians. Her father being Welsh descendant and mom being German descendant. A switch from the tree was common in that household. If they were alive today, they would have been in jail today ! But the kids were raised well and were successful.

An interesting thing about spanking, corporal punishment’s in general, and punishment in general is that it doesn’t work. Over time people simply adapt and you need a bigger stick each time to get the same results.

We live down south in Gallia County...Jackson is about 40 minutes from us.

I haven’t even heard of this case. Either I don’t pay enough attention or it’s just not been covered in the local news very well.

I disagree.

My experiece with both my kids and as a kid with my parents has shown me that is not true.

Likewise the experiece with most of my friends both from their parents and to their kids.

I felt just like you did and disagreed vehemently. Take a look at the science though and you’ll change your mind. Spanking doesn’t help in the long run and can even hurt the relationship. Your dad is a rare one as most spankers are angry when they spank.

I’ll bet that you and most of your friends did much more than spank and that spanking lasted only a very short time. As an aside, I once saw a child hit their younger sibling in the store. The mom grabbed the kid and shouted, “We don’t hit!” as she smacked him.

Any discipline, given out in anger rather than a consistent level of punishment, will not be effective.

Yes, with us, prior to the spanking was a much longer discussion, confirming that the child knew the rules and the consequences.

The problem I see is not the spanking, but those that lash-out in anger, regardless of it being a backhand, or a grounding out of proportion with the act.

My point, and the experience I've seen after paying attention for decades, it that spanking is effective, if done in a controlled and consistent manner.

Absolutely, true. Plus discipline isn't punishment. Discipline, the goal, is self-control, self-management.

Check the science on spanking and punishment in general. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a sissified parent who rolls over. Positive reinforcement works better than negative. That's where the data points and, as loving parents, we should want to use the very best methods available in child rearing.
