Shouldn’t be a problem. There is always a massive waste around here.

They're worried about a shortage of jack'o'lanterns? Really?

I'd be more worried about the shortage of pumpkin pie.

About ten years ago here in Connectcut, there was a flood that washed away a number of pumpkin patches a little later in the year.

My brother, who could never resist getting something for nothing, was pulling pumpkins out of the Farmington River as they floated downstream.

Use potatoes instead. That’s what they do in Idaho.

I’m sure pretty much any vegetable like squash, turnip, parsnip, carrot would substitute? Pumpkin pie is all about the sugar and cinnamon. The underlying vegetable is essentially a bulking agent! Am I right?

Save up old newspapers. Make paper mache (or however you spell it). Get some orange paint. Voila! Jack-o-Lanterns.

More fun for the kids!

I think I read somewhere that the original european jack o'lantern was turnip. I couldn't make something like that up.

Exactly!Even without the vegetable
— A down home Chess Pie will do the trick:

Original Recipe Yield 8 servings

Ingredients

1/2 cup butter
2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 eggs
1 tablespoon cornmeal
1/4 cup evaporated milk
1 tablespoon distilled white vinegar
1 (9 inch) unbaked pie shell

Directions

1.Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).

2.In a large bowl, mix the butter, sugar and vanilla together. Mix in the eggs, then stir in the cornmeal, evaporated milk and vinegar until smooth.

3.Bake for 10 minutes in the preheated oven, then reduce heat to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C) for 40 minutes. Let cool. Cut and top servings with whipped cream. You will think you have died and gone to heaven.

Blow up a balloon and put the paper mache over the balloon. Helps keep the shape until the glue dries.

I’m more concerned about the upcoming Texas Beef shortage. After all, Beef actually tastes good.

Most of the pumpkin pie fillings that are bought in a can at the grocery store are not made of pumpkin, but squash like butternut and such.

According to Alton Brown, butternut squash makes for a better pie than pumpkin.

Bummer, it is so much fun to pick your own pumpkin. However, there are many fine artificialm ones at the craft store. I bet there will be a general shortage of pumpikins for pies as well. Double bummer.

Tried that. Cousin Bobby ate all the paste, threw up and had to go to the hospital. Glued his guts together. He couldn’t go to the bathroom for a month. When he finally did, it was the headline in the local paper. I think they called out the national guard.
