By dismissing the very common view that there is no conflict between science and religion the dolt author is presenting the dilemma of the false choice and a false dichotomy.
Moreover there is this....

It is hard for me to conceive of a less American viewpoint. It is to protect our inalienable rights that governments are made up of free men. And it is in knowing that government is a necessary evil, composed of men who are inclined to evil, that government is made to be of limited and enumerated powers and among them are NOT in having a government disposed to control your acts with a view towards the disposition of your soul.
