Providence, RI - Rhode Island State Police say that the shooting death of a woman's Pit bull, "Champ" was an "unfortunate accident".

Accident or not, a beloved family companion is dead.

The tragedy happened on Wednesday morning when a fugitive task force was stationed outside of a home in Providence.

Though the task force was waiting for a fugitive to emerge, they were instead greeted by two dogs who had been let out for a potty break.

Moments after the dogs were let outside, shots were fired.

The officer who fired the three shots told the dog's owner that the dog "growled" at him.

I know if my dogs sense someone around the house they will leave the back door growling...just doing what dogs do.

I know there are a few cops out there, but they are getting harder and harder to find. I guess that is to be expected in a police state.

I too.

I’d like to post 1 of those “Desi Arnaz” pix. These threads are the same every time.

At least the cops said it’s accidental, and they want to help with the vet bills. Usually it’s “investigation” time and there is no apology to anyone.

Give them a little break, guys.

... it’s a murder “freebie” /// the cops get to shoot and kill something “live,” get to watch it die without any legal repercussions ... get to brag and boast to each other ...
stuff like, “any effin dog comes near me barking or growling i’m going to blow it’s effin head off.” Some of them are just waiting for some deranged person or innocent barking dog to “make their day.” Signed, ex-police science major.

If the neighbor’s kid hits a baseball through your window, do you want his parents to “help” to pay to replace it or do you want them to pay replacement costs for that window?

Same principle here.

The officer who shot the dog made a decision to discharge his weapon. He should be held accountable for his actions, and part of taking responsibility means paying the price for what you have done.

I know that it has happened at least one time and I think it’s going to happen again, and I will not feel sorry one bit for the officer who brings it on himself. I have reference to a dog owner blowing away a policeman who shoots his dog.

If the police departments would fire some of their trigger-happy force members who kill citizens’ dogs this will come to an end, but—and correct me if I’m wrong—it has yet to happen.

It would seem that these incidents are happening too often. My guess is that the NAZI Stormtropper academies across the country which indoctrinate these Gestapo types, they are taught to blow away a dog if there is any QUESTION of their personal security - and they are doing so.

The cops have definitely crossed the line far too often and we have allowed ourselves to be turned into a quasi-military police state. We have too many law-enforcement personnel - too many local cops, state cops, ATF, DEA, County Cops, TSA, Homeland Security, FBI, CIA, etc, etc. This is insane and these are the fruits of it.

The Founding Fathers would never have stood for it.

That’s nice. But too many of these cops have become just another collection of union guys looking for higher pay, promotions and perks instead of people with a decent interest in the communities in which they serve.

We DO need civilian review boards. We can’t trust them to police their own any more.

Yes, unions stink. I despise them.

Know what bothers me where I live? Not much else except the big hoo-hah made every time a policeman from the AREA dies. Even when the man was retired.

Here, they all must have a giant funeral where they are all buried at the same cemetery. The funeral procession literally officially SHUTS DOWN whatever road they are on - usually including our beltway. So as if the beltway isn’t enough trouble, whole sections are closed so this high&mighty procession (you know, ALL police must go to the funeral even if the man worked at Mayberry 75mi away from the big city and hardly anyone knows him) can be unaffected by traffic.

That irritates me to NO end.

They definitely have a “they” versus “us” mentality.

It takes a certain mentality to be a cop or else they wouldn’t become one.

I gotta tell you that is a pit is growling at me, I might shoot too.

If a dog -- ANY dog is growling at you, that is your warning. You can retreat at that point. If the dog is charging you, that's different. But if you happened on his turf, he growls, you retreat, everybody goes home and gets a belly rub. The dog gave him a warning, the cop killed the dog. The cop is a moron. And I'm not a pit bull fan either, but killing a dog that only growled at you is just a stupid person, cop or not.

Well let me say that I’m not a cop and I’m not going to invade a pit bull’s turf. I’m also not fast enough to outrun the pit if it came to that. I may or may not shoot, depending on the exact circumstances, but I don’t and won’t trust a pit and there’s a good chance he’s not going to get the benefit of doubt from me.
