The Fox commentators noted that Rick Perry's best moment was his anecdote about a cancer survivor whose "lobby[ing]" convinced him to mandate Gardasil. It appeared to be his one good moment in an otherwise dreadfully bad debate performance. Unfortunately, as National Review Online contributor Katrina Trinko exposes, it was all a fib:
When Michele Bachmann lobbed the crony capitalism charge at Rick Perry, he said that the lobbyist who had impacted him was 31-year-old Heather Burcham.“I got lobbied on this issue,” Perry said. “I got lobbied by a 31 year old young lady who had stage 4 cervical cancer. I spent a lot of time with her. She came by my office She talked to me about this program.”
Perry, however, did not meet Burcham until after he had signed the executive order mandating the HPV vaccine.
Perry spokesman Mark Miner denies that Perry spoke disingenuously about Burcham’s role in the process, but concedes that Perry did not meet Burcham until after signing the executive order.
Miner says Perry’s comment was “not at all” misleading.
“When you’re talking about legislation, when you’re going through the legislative process, you have people come in all the time,” Miner says. “This was someone who really had a personal, human story to tell on this. They hit it off. And the governor really kept in touch with her, visited her in the hospital, visited her throughout her long ordeal, really had a personal impact on him.”
Is this quote true? On the face of it, it's no more of a lie than Sarah Palin saying she put a state plane on ebay--she DID, but it didn't sell as a result of that.
The point in the earlier case was that it showed Palin's unconventional and clever way of dealing with the situation, not that ebay is a great place to sell and airplane. In this case, it seems Perry was showing that he was lobbied by this woman. If the quote above is factually true, I don't see that this is the end of the world--it's just politics. And these are politicians.
I’m sure all lobbyists continue to lobby politicians long after a bill becomes law.
Correct title to sourced material would be nice.
He was lobbied on the issue by the young lady who was a cervical cancer victim just like he said but it was when the Tx Legislature was debating whether to overturn the Exec Order or not. She lobbied to Perry and the TX Legislature to keep the drug on the list (with an opt out).

I readily admitted we should have had an opt-in but I don’t know what part of opt out most parents don’t get and the fact is I erred on the side of life and I will always err on the side of life as a governor as a president of the United States.”

Where does Perry say he met her before signing the EO? Am I missing that quote?

THIS statement in reference to gardasil should scare the bejeepers out of every conservative bar none.
Lying with silence is still lying. From what he said, anyone listening would assume she lobbied him to sign the EO. In reality, he signed it and then she worked with him to try to stop the legislature from overturning it.
The first would give him an emotional reason to sign the EO. The second merely means he worked to stop the Legislature from overturning him.
He didn’t lie.
But he did bomb tonight, in a pretty big way.
Put a fork in Perry; he’s done.
Yes, I believe it is clear that the machine has mounted the destruction campaign against Rick, and it is working, here anyway. Perry is undoubtedly about to get the Palin treatment from the media, the RINOS and the conservative neocon websites. He has got to be taken down, or else the power brokers will be out of power and jobs. It’s palpable what is goint on. These cabals want Romney or no one. And that is who we are going to get. Unless we lift the Perry campaign. He has the record on JOBS, he is right on SS, and the border, and we are going to find that we need the Hispanic vote in the general election. Do you want that vote via Rick, or do you want it via Romney? Because you are going to get it with one or the other, whether you like it or not.
The HPV thing is now a dead horse. Bachman is starting to look like a fool trying to ride it anyway.
