Rick Perry Lied About Cancer Victim (based on: The Timeline on the HPV Vaccine)
based on National Review online. ^ | 9-23-11 | Dangus based on Katrina Trinko

Posted on 09/22/2011 9:27:22 PM PDT by dangus

The Fox commentators noted that Rick Perry's best moment was his anecdote about a cancer survivor whose "lobby[ing]" convinced him to mandate Gardasil. It appeared to be his one good moment in an otherwise dreadfully bad debate performance. Unfortunately, as National Review Online contributor Katrina Trinko exposes, it was all a fib:

When Michele Bachmann lobbed the crony capitalism charge at Rick Perry, he said that the lobbyist who had impacted him was 31-year-old Heather Burcham.

“I got lobbied on this issue,” Perry said. “I got lobbied by a 31 year old young lady who had stage 4 cervical cancer. I spent a lot of time with her. She came by my office She talked to me about this program.”

Perry, however, did not meet Burcham until after he had signed the executive order mandating the HPV vaccine.

Perry spokesman Mark Miner denies that Perry spoke disingenuously about Burcham’s role in the process, but concedes that Perry did not meet Burcham until after signing the executive order.

Miner says Perry’s comment was “not at all” misleading.

“When you’re talking about legislation, when you’re going through the legislative process, you have people come in all the time,” Miner says. “This was someone who really had a personal, human story to tell on this. They hit it off. And the governor really kept in touch with her, visited her in the hospital, visited her throughout her long ordeal, really had a personal impact on him.”

Drudge is linking it, though. Bachmann isn’t the problem. Her smears against Perry for Romney is the problem.

FR is trying to destroy the only viable conservative in the race, and that will be Jim Robinson’s legacy, IMO. I just had a thread pulled where I quoted what Perry said about the young woman who died of cervical cancer. I quoted the entire quote, and showed how Bachman was lying, but FR decided to delete it.

Jim Robinson’s legacy will be either a Mitt Romney presidency or a Barack Obama presidency if FR continues on its current path.

I call BS on ABC. There was plenty of lobbying after the EO, as the legislature was working to overturn it. Perry needs to fire his entire debate-prep team, though, and maybe try to emulate the awesome Hermanator.

Egads, can you people read? The charge is crony capitalism. He tried to defend himself by claiming he was lobbied by this woman! He never met with her until after the fact! IOW, it could not possibly have been her lobbying him as the reason he signed it...hence, THE LIE...

After watching this tonight, maybe a teleprompter might help him in future debates.

If he spoke to her before the legislature took up the matter he did not lie and this is ridiculous. It feels like the media is dead set against Perry and that is usually a ringing endorsement on FR for a candidate.

I can accept that Perry made a mistake in the way he handled the vaccine issue. He honored the will of the legislature and he has done so several times. I examined his record at length and determined he is a pretty solid Governor with a pretty conservative record. He has gotten things done in Texas. We can elect the best bomb-thrower in the world but if they can’t bend congress it won’t do any good.

His debate performance was pretty disappointing. I knew he was weak in a debate format but he appeared to be overcoached and locked up. Perry is at his best when he is himself and he does need to improve in the debates. Despite his crappy performance tonight on the media stage, Perry has the longest record as an Executive of anyone on stage and I much prefer him to Romney.

How quickly people here forget.... the media selected McCain. The media is selecting Romney. One must ask.... why?

You better believe it! This is what Obama was hoping for and even that weirdo may be bang on, the White House Insider. They do want the party split for an Obama run up the middle. The machine wants us demoralized NOW. And it’s early! The neocons and the RINOS and with conservatives assisting have GOT to take Rick down. Larry Flynnt has been brought in for the pile on. Useful idiots are all over the place.

You’re missing the context. He was explaining why he had acted as he had.

It’s looking like Mitt has a clear path to the nom. And Darrell Issa just endorsed him. The problem is Issa’s investigations may force Obambi to pull an LBJ and drop out, and I don’t know if Mitt can beat the Hilldebeast. </wild speculation>

Uh, Carling, YOU’RE THE LIAR.

You changed “admit” to “admitted” to make it seem like he was admitting it to her at the time, indicating he was acknowledging this conversation was after the fact.

He was admitting to the audience that he should have had an optin.

The context of bringing up the incident was to answer why he had acted as he had. If the incident happened after he had acted, it could not have been why he acted as he had.

Rick Perry didn’t need anyone to mount a campaign against him. He was his own worst enemy from day one. If you can’t admit that, I am sorry. Had he been what everyone THOUGHT he was riding a white horse out of the Texas sunrise, nothing could have stopped him. The fact is he isn’t that man. And he isn’t going to be. He is Texas. It’s a magical world, Texas is. But it isn’t like Iowa or Pennsylvania, or Ohio. It just isn’t. And what works in Texas won’t work in places that aren’t Texas. It’s just that simple.

I’m sure all lobbyists continue to lobby politicians long after a bill becomes law.

Stop being so perceptive.

Bachmann is not relevant here. He was stating why he signed the Gardasil executive order. He denied it was because he was lobbied by Merck, and told a story of who did lobby him. But this cancer patient could not have been the reason he acted as he had, since she met him after he had acted.

You REALLY need to knock off calling everyone a liar. REALLY. It’s gotten old and it’s way over the top. Especially when it is a LIE.

Whether he outright lied or just told a half-truth in an attempt to deceive, the point is the same. Rick Perry didn’t make the decision to issue this executive order on the basis of his conversation with this woman. The people who talked to him before he made the decision were other advisers including those with strong ties to Merck. His answer sounds wonderful as a sound byte but isn’t entirely honest. Instead of “Bush-lite,” I worry that Perry may become “Clinton-lite.”

Wow, TexMom, did you get the same lying press release Carlin did or something? He never said he “admitted [to her] we should have had an opt in.” He said, “I readily admit [now, to those here present] we should have had an opt in.”

By lying, and changing “admit” to “admitted,” this quote sends a present-tense aside into the past, making it appear like the context of this meeting was after he had signed the executive order.

The true context was the opposite: he was explaining why he had signed the executive order, claiming it was because of a meeting which had not yet happened.

I guess some people are upset because they thought he was saying she lobbied him before he signed the EO, even though he never said that and was just trying to give a face to the reason one would support what he did.

So long as she lobbied him about it, that’s what he said, so it’s not a lie. She may be the reason he initially fought the legislature when they opposed his EO. She was lobbying for him to defend his EO against their attacks. After all, people have attacked him for that as well.
