Happy National Hunting and Fishing Day (Sept. 24)
The Washington Times ^ | September 23, 2011 | Ted Nugent

Wilderness is clean, well-stocked, thanks to outdoor recreation community

It is sad to admit that hardly anyone knows what the acronyms SCI, DU, NSSF, NWTF and RMEF stand for or what those organizations do. That’s not your fault but rather the hunting community’s dismal failure to conduct fundamental public relations. As public relations go, the hunting community couldn’t sell a blanket to a naked man in a blizzard.

The accomplishments of SCI (Safari Club International), DU (Ducks Unlimited), RMEF (Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation) and many other hunting/conservation organizations are extraordinary. But because of their failure at relating to the public, the average American will never know of their incredible wildlife and environmental conservation accomplishments, which literally are envied around the world.

Saturday was the 39th annual celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Day. President Nixon established this important day back in 1972 as a day to recognize American sportsmen for our herculean conservation efforts.

If you were unaware of this day, don’t feel bad, because the vast majority of American hunters and fishermen also are unaware of it. Of the few who are, fewer still will write a letter to their local newspaper, post information about it on an Internet blog or celebrate it in any way, shape or form.

The national television news media, newspapers and informational websites will not mention National Hunting and Fishing Day. This is because they, too, are unaware of it. Again, this is because of the hunting-and-fishing community’s abject failure to conduct Public Relations 101.

Across America, numerous local and national hunting and fishing clubs provide, at their own expense, wonderful education outreach programs in which knowledgeable instructors introduce young people to fishing and hunting in a safe, professional environment. There is no coverage of these events by the media...

Well, I'm a life member of B.A.S.S. and the NAFC, an annual member of the NRA, have been thinking about joining DU, and the army taught me what a REMF is, so I think I'm pretty acronym-savvy on the rod-n-gun side of things.

And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."

I appreciate Ted!

Last time I actually saw him he was wearing a loincloth standing on top of an enormous speaker bank in Hampton, VA.

Everyday around here is hunting/fishing/trapping appreciation day...

I’m a life member of that old RMEF organization :-) and it’s a shame the enemedia don’t make people aware of the good all these organizations do for conservation and wildlife. They’re too busy reporting on everything the anti hunting and fishing enviro-nazis are doing most of the time.

The only good conservationist is a hunter, an angler, or anyone who actually cultivates and lives off the land. Pencil-pushing urban lobbyists, weekend green-weenie activists, and tweed jacket, ivory-tower academics are a bigger threat to nature than any group of real outdoorsmen ever could be. And none of those sniveling, flabby-muscled little shits would last a week out there if the power really did go out. But we'd have one helluva fat and happy bear population.

Beau is at Bear Camp this weekend, ‘Up Nort.’ They’re going after ‘Legend Monster Bear.’ (He’s already harvested two bear this month.)

I’ll try to plink off something around here on the farm this weekend. If not, there’s a chipmunk in our store that needs killin’ who has bedeviled us all day, LOL!

Well good luck to all of you.

We live in town now after living in a very rural area for a lot of years. We've got scads of tree squirrels because the property in the rear has a lot of trees including 6 or 7 big firs.

The other day I looked out the back windows and two raccoons were walking across the top of our fence, I guess they don't know this is the city. LOL!

P.S. I like your fish. :-)

Thanks for the ping Jaz. And a fruitful H&FD to you all.

I’ll be celebrating it in a special way.

Won’t be able to celebrate it till fishing Sunday, but tomorrow will be with special friends from outdoor circles.

This evening right before the sun went down we saw a LOT of deer while 4 wheeling.

Hope your bud gets his bear Diana. Nothing like a nice bear rug in front of an open fire to bring out the animal in you (grin).

The best way to get bear is in the winter time.

Cut a big hole in the ice. Sprinkle canned peas around the hole.

When the bear comes to take a pea kick him in the ice hole.

One of you just had to pull my chain on that, didn't you?

Thanks for the ping, Jaz!

Back from the field for a few days.

You're not going to believe this: I got ANOTHER mountain lion sighting on September 29 in the Bill Williams NWR river canyon. I (driving) and three of my co-workers saw a LARGE mountain lion bound across the dirt road only about 40 yards in front of us at dawn as we were heading to work. This part of the refuge is desert, but in only about 10 seconds, it darted 100 yards into the riparian jungle of the river system and disappeared into all the mesquite, willow, cottonwood, and salt cedar. It was a FANTASTIC up-close sighting!

Then later that day, as we were hiking back to the truck we saw a badger run along the sand track and finally disappear into the jungle too.

Two great mammal sightings in one day!
