Is it ok to let a few hundred people determine who the Republican candidate is?(vanity)

I know it stinks to have libs cross-over to push McCain during the primaries, but is it any different to stack the deck in a straw poll? (can straw polls e stacked?) I admit to not knowing how a straw poll is conducted but i read where Rick Perry had paid for several hundred people's breakfasts but it did him no good. Are meals a part of a straw poll?are there speeches? Carnival rides? Free parking? Coat checks? Herman Cain seems to be a decent fellow but is he being chosen the right way?

Herman Cain didn't buy me breakfast, or anything else. I haven't watched any of the so-called debates. But I have heard him interviewed a number of times and I like him.

Herman Cain is closer to grass roots conservatism than any of the current crop of candidates except, possibly, Michele Bachmann, to whom he is about equal.

It is pretty obvious who the establishment guys are, two dueling flavors named Mutt and Prick.

A straw poll is merely an indication of a canidates particualr strength at any given minute. It does not choose him or her for anything. It merely like any other poll, a snap shot in time. No one is “being choosen” by a straw poll.

That is what the actual primary elections are for.

What is the right way? Maybe it had something to do with his message that warranted 7 standing ovations. Parry and Romney come from the same cloth. Establishment politicians. The tea party spoke loud and clear when the voted for Cain. Now this is change we Can believe in.

I discount the Mackinac poll because its taken by a very limited number of political activists who are genetically orientated to vote Romney.

That said, I think my fellow Michiganders are a little tired of seeing candidates step over us to get to the perceived power brokers. Its going to take a candidate who gets out and spends some serious time among the folks.

Nope, it was the unblinking eye of the camera and Rick Perry's own voice that did him in.

All we had to do was watch him amd listen to him and I don't care how many breakfasts he got, nobody wanted him to be president anymore.

But that's what these debates are for, isn't it?

Cain won because he was honest, solid and real. No poofy hair, no lying excuses, no goofy isolationism, not a speck of RINO. Isn't that what we all want?

I doubt any thinking person is swayed by straw polls. Everyone knows they are only a measure of organizational strength within the state, and have no bearing on the electability of the candidates.

Bachmann won the Iowa straw poll (arguably the best known and most influential) and she is just about to disappear from the race. Ron Paul has won a couple and he isn't going anywhere.

I'm glad Herman Cain won the Florida straw poll, but I don't think it is indicative of his future success as a candidate.

Why is Perry being written about as though his campaign is on the ropes?

Herman Cain doesn’t have a “few hundred” supporters, he has hundreds of thousands. He has over 100,000 volunteers alone.

The Florida straw poll attendees were GOP activists who applied in advance and were selected by lot. On the whole, the straw poll voters were representative of the GOP base.

If the Florida results seem odd, consider that straw polls reflect not just the composition of the group but also the events immediately surrounding the vote.

Perry did poorly in the debates, did not stay and campaign after that, hired numerous former aides of the discredited RINO Charlie Crist, and, worst of all, in the debate echoed the liberal attack line against conservatives on the immigration issue. Romney is not fully trusted by GOP conservatives due to Romneycare and other flip-flops.

Meanwhile, Cain was solid in the debate, gave a great speech that was five by five on conservative themes, and campaigned hard for votes.

I really like Cain and hope he gets more questions at debates and is able to prove himself more and more. If He doesn’t then so be it. We should not write him off.

Perry has not impressed me at all.

Romney is a No.

Bachman is not gaining traction at all.

Palin is not in it yet. And I could honestly see her endorsing Cain.

Gee, I hope it takes more than what a community organizer does.

On what grounds? Because he scored high in a Florida poll?

It’s not ok but this is one voted on measure of popularity among many to come; it’s an indicator, not a pick. Would this question even be asked if Perry or Romney had won the straw poll? They are the media/GOP elite picks and how would that be that OK? If Cain takes off and gains momentum then great and I would be more happy about that than having the pick of the party “leaders” and the press shoved up my backside like they did in 2008. The primary process is a mess and controlled by the media and the national, state, and local GOP power players, not the voters. If the power players don’t like you then guess what; you won’t get money and support and will be left hanging in the breeze. That’s how we keep ending up with democrat Ben Nelson in NE. He receives tacit and sometimes explicit support from the “far smarter” GOP party leaders although I don’t think that will happen this time around.

Actually, if she does not run I could see her doing that and it is the right thing to do. Palin or Cain are infinitely more representative of conservatism than the GOP-elite picked mitt and twit. I like them both and would prefer a ticket with both of them on it in either combination.

Because to do so is good for socialism.

Unfortunately the primaries only show how popular a candidate is in a particular region. In this case the rest of us end up being stuck with them.
