What is this on the cabinet in front of the sink in our new kitchen? The panel above the under sink doors has a drawer pull and when you pull on it it flips down 45 degrees revealing a rectangular tray. Does anyone know what the purpose of this thing is?

Yes, it’s just a hidey hole to keep your sponges in.

The cabinet may have originally been cut for a cook-top and that is part of a spill catch?

The guy who made your custom cabinets watched a log of old spy movies and wanted a secret hiding place for his treasure maps.

Some people like gadgetry things. I would do something like just because I could.

Nope, it’s sponge storage. They were all the rage back in the late ‘80’s and early ‘90’s. (My previous life was as a draftsman for custom cabinet manufacturers)

Storage for wet sponges, bottle brushes, and other icky utilitarian cleaning items you don’t want to leave in the sink. They make them out of plastic too.

It’s for sponges, little brushes, etc. All the little things that collect around the sink. (With a little dish in there, it’s also a good place for wedding rings.)

You’re a guy, aren’t you? :)

It's a secret place to hide in case the place is surrounded by hostile Indians. You know, Indians, a bunch of guys who will crash through your door waving tomahawks and then one of them sez, he sez, "'Allo. We are 'ere from Microsoft technical support. You may call me 'Bob'." But you know "Bob" isn't his real name.

Or it's for sponges. But I think it's to hide from outsourced technical support. Wish I had one.
