Jon Stewart’s Guide to the 100 Other Places in the U.S. Named ‘Niggerhead’
Gawker ^ | October 4, 2011 | Matt Cherette

The revelation yesterday that a West Texas hunting camp used by the family of Rick Perry was named "Niggerhead" drew widespread outrage. The name is terribly offensive, of course, but is it also rare? That was the question on Jon Stewart's mind tonight during a Daily Show segment featuring Wyatt Cenac "on location" near New York's recently renamed "Nigger Lake."

That is what I always called them as well. I am from Texas and my husband who is from California also called them that

It’s ok—it’s in NY. They’re much more enlightened up there.

Reading through this thread made me laugh. I have those flowers in my yard. I had no idea my garden was racist, and that the n word was so commonly used.

I grew up in New York, born in 1950, and the word was pretty much verboten in polite society and in Catholic school schoolyards. Of course we did have the word melanzana, which sort of meant the same thing.

Think about it. In context.

I used to swim at Nigger Beach in Lee County, Florida. It was on the left just before the causeway leading to Sanibel Island.

Here in the UK the word ‘Nigger’ was commonly used, particularly by older folks up until quite recently. My grandmother was the sweetest, kindest old lady you could wish to meet and would regularly use the term ‘Nigger Brown’ to describe a colour without the slightest intention to offend.

Likewise in films of the forties and fifties:

I once saw a bar called “Limey’s” in the US so as you can imagine I was outraged and demanded it was immediately renamed “White Anglo-saxon Celtics” bar. . . . . :D

This story is nothing but fecal waste.

The Democrats know about fecal waste.

The more you stir it the worse it stinks. So they keep stirring.

Typical Democrat stunt, to have a racist in the White House and accuse someone else of being racist.

These names are everywhere and to numerous to list.

And other similar words as well. For instance, iirc several years back it was noted various places that "squaw" doesn't refer to a female Indian, but rather to the physiology that makes female Indians female. In a highly derogatory way too, basically "squaw" amounts to "c*nt" or "tw@t" when translated properly.

Why would this plant have a name like that?

You know, some folks have Proutian moments biting into a beloved cookie. Others, it’s thinking back on the many usages of the word nigger.

Kinda brings a tear to my eye.

It is out of character for him to come out on the side of Republicans, ridicule, impugn the Democrats on any issue as he did here. I suspect “Nigger Lake” was too good of a story to ignore, conjured up the Guide to the 100 Other Places in the U.S. Named ‘Niggerhead’ as a segway into the story.

But also note that he finished by taking on his favorite target, Gretchen Carlson, and making her out to be a hypocritical airhead again. Not that she doesn’t provide him with the ammunition.

Do I detect sarcasm?

For me it's not the many usages of the word but the memories of pulling these plants and playing a game of chase with my brothers as we tried to bonk each other on the head.

We were blessed to have had a happy childhood.
