Barry Sanders to Perform Monday Night Football in Place of Hank Williams Jr
NESN ^ | 10/7/2011 | Erik Frenz

Whether it was the decision of ESPN or Hank Williams Jr., the song that has been the staple of ESPN's Monday Night Football intro for 20 years is no more. With that, NFL fans across the country immediately began to speculate as to what would be the next song to lead into everyone's favorite Monday night programming.

It turns out there may not be a song at all, at least for the time being.

Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders announced via Twitter that he will do the intro for this week's matchup between the Lions and the Bears.

"Ok, I admit it," Sanders said. "I will be at MNF this week and doing the intro."

It's fitting that the network was able to get Sanders to do it, as this will be the first time that the Lions are playing a prime-time game since 2005, and the first time they appear on MNF since 2001.

From the sound of it, the spoken word will be the intro of choice for now.

According to the Detroit Free Press, ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said, "This is the format we'll likely use the remainder of the season. We haven't made any decisions beyond that."

First read this on ESPN and out of curiosity scrolled down to read the comments. Believe me racism is alive and well in America and it isn’t coming from Hank Williams Jr. Hate is thriving among the dumbed down idiots that are still reliving the civil war and want whitey to get out of America, ad nauseum...barf, barf and more barf.
I won’t watch Monday night football EVER again and it is more than just about Hank Williams Jr.

It won’t matter. As of last Monday, I’m done with MNF.

“Barry Sanders to Perform Monday Night Football in Place of Hank Williams Jr”

In case he suddenly turns white, on the plus side he’s faster and far more elusive than Hank Williams, and no doubt can outrun bad press. Certainly a better choice than Emmit Smith.

NO HANK, NO WATCH! hubby will, but I can read, I’m behind 4-5 books.

I agree with Hank his 1st A rights were violated.

I hope he runs for Corker’s seat in ‘12. Corker is a fence straddler.

At least Sanders can sing better than Hank Jr.

ESPN successfully drags Sanders into the dirt with them. I thought Sanders was smarter than that.

Looks like I’ll have more time to watch hockey. Thank you ESPN for helping me decide what to watch on Monday nights.

There shouldn’t have to be a choice...Hank didn’t say anything wrong. If the shoe was on the other foot and P Diddy made a comment on the view..would he be out the door?

It’s Sanders because the game is in Detroit.

I have a better idea, why not just go back to the classic MNF theme.

“I agree with Hank his 1st A rights were violated.”

Hank’s First Amendment Rights have not been violated as the First Amendment does not guarantee contract employment.

I cannot stand the announcers they have for MNF, so I rarely watch.

Hank owns the rights to the lyrics. So I suspect it will be a brand new song.

Oh, surely. Look at who they’ve fired for controversy in the past: for instance, the ultra-liberal Rush Limbaugh. Note how they employed, and for all I know continue to employ, the perfectly stable reactionary right-wing Bible-thumping Keith Olbermann./s
