Milton Friedman shows the stupidity of tariffs.
Zero or virtually zero Japanese automobiles being imported in 1979.... go look it upFrom toyotageek.com/toyota_tales/1977_celica_yellow_rose.html
Even though both the Sports 800 and the 2000GT came before the Celica, the Celica can be credited as Toyotas breakthrough success in the sports coupe market.See also: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota#Production_and_sales_numbers - Production and sales numbers
Motor Trend awarded the Celica with the prestigious Import Car of the Year award upon its introduction in 1976. The Celica accounted for approximately 20% of Toyotas rapidly growing sales numbers during 1976 and 1977. During those years it was also the best selling Imported Sports Coupe in America. That is a huge market stake for a coupe. Those kind of sales percentages are unheard of in todays sports coupe marketplace.

The ignoramuses of today don’t even know that tariffs were the main source of funding for decades and decades for the Federal Gov’t. Along with tobacco and alcohol taxes. The ATF (BATF) was set up to enforce the collection of those two taxes.
And as your post states, the US Customs Service was originally set up to collect tariffs not to hassle people getting off of international flights
You sir are correct. In a year like 1979 200,000 Jap import cars came in and total Automobile sales were ~8-10 million. So Japanese cars were about 2-4% of the market
According to the above source, in 1980, Japanese imports in 1980 were 21% of US sales. Total imports were 37% of US sales.
I’m sorry, wish you could have bought a Ford Truck.
Thank you WORTH REPOSTING!
Which is why tariffs are helpful to the American economy. ;)Works both ways. If we want them to drop tariffs, raising tariffs isn’t going to accomplish this.
Facts are stubborn things...
Someone please bring me up to date as I’ve missed a lot here. I see we got people being called ‘traitor’ a lot, anyone been called a ‘child molester’ or a ‘terrorist’ yet?
Not that I noticed.
Not that I noticed.
Great! That means I get to call people those names right?
